BREAKDOWN

HUMANS:

EDDIE – Male, any ethnicity, early 20’s. Lead of show, works at run-down Animal Shelter. Unusual, likable, sincere, positive energy, big heart, attractive but not movie star good looks, a young man on the verge of manhood, a little “off-center”, struggling to forget the past and cover his “scars” from being teased and ridiculed all his life because he talks to animals. DANCE: Strong mover/dancer. VOCAL RANGE: Very strong lead contemporary musical theatre Bari-Tenor, good rock/pop instincts, vocal range: low A (ideally) to comfortable & easy high Ab.

HANNAH - Female, any ethnicity, early 20’s. Eddie’s love interest, works for the Mayor but barely holding on to her job. Pretty but not gorgeous. Struggling to reconcile what her widowed sad father wants and finding herself. Has a hard time standing up for her self. DANCE: Strong mover/dancer. VOCAL RANGE: Strong lead contemporary wide range musical theatre singer – vocal range: strong low A to high E (belt or very strong mix). Good rock/pop instincts.

ROGER/GERRY/ JIMMY- Male, 40’s-50’s, African American, or possibly other ethnicities. Triple role. Role #1- ROGER- 40’s-50’s, educated, bit inscrutable, keeping the pain inside, colder than his emotional wife (Alice) but turns out to be a caring guy. Role #2- GERRY - A working class manager of the Animal Shelter for 25 years. His crusty exterior doesn’t completely hide his good heart and affection for Eddie. Role #3, JIMMY- sweet assistant to Mayor. DANCE: Good mover. VOCAL RANGE: Strong “character” soloist - must show strong musicianship - bluesy Baritone - high G.

ALICE/ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER/ MAYOR JENKINS - Female, 30’s-50’s, any ethnicity. Triple role. Role #1- ALICE- plays as 40’s, emotionally distraught, drinking to cover her pain at feeling guilty for her dog disappearing- likeable, benevolent. Role #2- ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER JACKIE- cocky, funny, talks about her feats in the third person. Role #3- MAYOR JENKINS- plays as late 40’s- mid 50’s, authoritative, seasoned politician struggling to keep a small city afloat despite budget problems as well as getting re-elected. Has gotten used to saying “no” to every request she gets for preferential consideration. Smart, funny. DANCE: Good mover. VOCAL RANGE: Strong “character” soloist - vocal range: flexible - performs one very fast patter/rap section - excellent musicianship and fast diction a must.
