BREAKDOWN

YOUNG MARIE VAN GOETHEM. The very young dancer who posed for the famed Degas sculpture “Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen.” Marie is smart, tough, funny, streetwise and resourceful. She is fiercely protective of her little sister, Charlotte, and helps to support her dysfunctional and poverty-stricken family by working as a “little rat” at the Paris Opera Ballet, but also by stealing. Her goal is to become a full-fledged ballerina so she can lift her family out of their dire circumstances. She is vulnerable to the harsh conditions which surround her, but she is talented and determined to succeed. History does not tell us what ever happened to the real Marie after she left the ballet. Needs to be a fantastic dancer, actor, and sing as well as possible. Must have exceptional classical ballet technique (pointe). Alto (Bb – Db). ROLE IS ON OFFER.

ADULT MARIE VAN GOETHEM. Now a woman in her fifties, weathered by time and circumstance. We do not know how she has spent the years since being a ballerina, except that she has lived an interesting life. All we know is that she has returned to see the sculpture that was made of her when she was young, in order to find some closure for a life that was diverted from the dance. She has the same character traits as young Marie—a feisty sense of humor, a toughness, pride and vulnerability. Beautiful singing and acting.Soprano (A – G), moves well.

EDGAR DEGAS. Famed impressionist painter and creator of the sculpture ”Little Dancer Aged Fourteen.” A cranky middle-aged man, a confirmed bachelor, notoriously insulting and witty. He is losing his eyesight and is terrified of not being able to work any more. Great acting and singing. Baritone (Ab – E). ROLE IS ON OFFER.

MARTINE VAN GOETHEM: Mother to Young Marie, and her other two daughters (Antoinette and Charlotte). Martine was once a dancer, but has come down in the world and is now a washwoman. She isn’t above getting money from men, too. She drinks too much as a way of lightening her burdens. She is a merry drunk, but can turn mean or maudlin at the drop of a hat. She is a loving yet neglectful single mother. Also: Dances well. Strong Alto (Belt), F# -- C. ROLE IS ON OFFER.

ANTOINETTE VAN GOETHEM: Marie’s older sister, a former ballerina, now turned courtesan. Antoinette is flighty, vain and a little naive. She believes she has a handle on life, but in fact is living precariously, at the mercy of the men she takes up with. She loves her sisters and has a good heart, always “helping” her sister Marie by giving bad advice. Very strong soprano singing, good acting, and movement. Coloratura Soprano with a dazzling high C. ROLE IS ON OFFER.

CHARLOTTE VAN GOETHEM (7 or 8 years old). She must act and sing really well. Must have classical ballet technique and sing very well. Alto (Bb – Db).

CHRISTIAN. Rehearsal violinist and romantic interest for Marie. A handsome and roguish young man, a talented musician, responds to Marie’s talent, and she to his. Early twenties. Need a great singer, someone with charm, danger, sex appeal. Tenor, A – F (solo) sings to B, moves well. ROLE IS ON OFFER.

CORBEIL –(shortened form of Vaucorbeil)—the director of the Paris Opera Ballet in 1881. (He would have known Marie in real life.) He is authoritarian with anyone who works at the ballet, and obsequious to anyone who may give money to the ballet. He’s willing to play favorites if it means receiving a donation, and will send young girls into the arms of patrons if it means that they renew their subscriberships. A very good politician within his organization. Baritone (G -E). Moves well. ROLE IS ON OFFER.

ADULT FEMALE DANCERS who sing to compromise the ensemble and play various characters in the world of the Paris Opera Ballet. Should have strong ballet technique. Most Adult Female dancers will dance en pointe.

ADULT MALE DANCERS who sing to compromise the ensemble and play various characters in the world of the Paris Opera Ballet. Should be 5’10 or taller and have strong ballet technique.

YOUNG FEMALE BALLERINAS to play between 13-18 years old. Must have strong technique, dance en pointe, and sing.
