Equity actor/singers and actor/singer/dancers for various roles in MAMMA MIA and FUN HOME. Seeking all ethnicities and genders. See breakdown.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a short vocal selection that demonstrates your best voice. An accompanist will be provided. Actors auditioning for MAMMA MIA should plan to stay for the dance callback on the day of the call. Vocal sides and more information will be provided at http://americanstage.org/auditions/.

DONNA – Female, late 30s-early 40s. Any ethnicity. The mother of a 20 year old girl. Attractive and free-spirited. A former lead singer in a group called “Donna and the Dynamos” who now owns and runs a hotel/casino on a Greek island. A strong feminist who also has a zany and vulnerable side. Principal role.

SOPHIE – Female, 18-25. Any ethnicity. A very special young woman who is determined to find the romance and happiness she feels eluded her mother. Has a wild, zany spirit even though she pursues a conventional marriage. Pop soprano. Principal role.

TANYA – Female, late 30s-early 40s. Any ethnicity. A former singer in the “Dynamos”. Rich, sophisticated, acerbic, funny, and witty. Supporting Principal role.

ROSIE – Female, late 30s-early 40s. Any ethnicity. Also a former singer in the “Dynamos” who now writes for and runs a feminist press. She’s confident, strong, and funny on the outside but shy underneath. Kooky and fun, good comic actress, bit of a clown. Actress who sings. Supporting Principal role.

LISA – Female, 18-25. Any ethnicity. Sophie’s friend who arrives to be a bridesmaid. Very energetic and kooky. Should sing and dance well. Featured Ensemble role.

ALI – Female, 18-25. Any ethnicity. Sophie’s friend. Impulsive and fun. Should contrast to Lisa and Sophie. Featured Ensemble role.

SAM – Male, 35-45. Any ethnicity. May be Sophie’s father. Left Donna 20 years ago because he was engaged to another woman. Charming, successful architect. Actor who sings. Baritone. Supporting Principal role.

HARRY – Male, 35-45. Any ethnicity. May be Sophie’s father. British financier, weathy, buttoned-up, and conservative but trying to reconnect with his freer, youthful self. Must do a very convincing English accent. Also an actor who sings. High baritone, tenor. Supporting Principal role.

BILL – Male, 35-45. Any ethnicity. May be Sophie’s father. A travel writer with no possessions or strings. Good-natured, always ready for adventure. Funny, preferably a big or imposing man. Supporting Principal role.

SKY – Male, late 20s. Any ethnicity. Sophie’s fiance. Athletic, attractive – has given up his life as a successful young businessman in order to make over Donna’s taverna and marry Sophie. Featured Ensemble role.

PEPPER – Male, 20s. Any ethnicity. Sky’s friend. Helps run the hotel. Charming, loves women, always flirting. Must be a good mover/dancer. Acrobatic skills a plus. Baritone/tenor. Featured Ensemble role.

EDDIE – Male, 20s. Any ethnicity. Another friend of Sky and hotel worker. Laid-back, easygoing. Also a mover/dancer role. Baritone/tenor. Featured Ensemble role.

ALISON – Female, 43 years old, any ethnicity. a cartoonist – narrator; now a self-aware adult, she is able to reflect insightfully on her own life and her relationship with her father before his tragic death

MEDIUM ALISON – Female, 19 years old, any ethnicity. A freshman at Oberlin College, discovering her sexuality; an incredibly well-read, hyper-intelligent teenager; her uncertainty about who she is makes her socially awkward at times

SMALL ALISON – Female, around 9 years old, any ethnicty. Alison Bechdel as a child; precocious and opinionated; on the cusp of finding herself and forming her own views on how a girl her age should behave and dress; confident and intelligent

BRUCE BECHDEL – Male, 40’s-50’s, Alison’s father, any ethnicity. High-school English teacher, funeral home director, spends his spare time on the historic restoration of his home; complex man with a hot temper as a result of years of repression; can be caring and attentive to his children but is also quick to anger

HELEN BECHDEL – Female, 40’s-50’s, Alison’s mother, any ethnicity. Alison’s mother; frustrated, exhausted by her tumultuous marriage; has spent her life trying to be a good mother and wife while turning a blind eye to the irreverent activities of her husband

CHRISTIAN BECHDEL – Male, Alison’s older brother, around 10 years old, any ethnicity. Oldest of the three children; strives to be the leader, but is sometimes overshadowed by Alison’s strong personality

JOHN BECHDEL – Male, Alison’s younger brother, around 6 years old, any ethnicity. Like most boys his age, he is full of energy with a quirky imagination; looks up to his siblings

JOAN – Female, 20’s a college student, any ethnicity. Student at Oberlin; exudes a confident, sexual energy, with a dry sense of humor; unlike Alison, Joan is very comfortable in her skin and openly identifies as a lesbian

ROY/MARK/PETE/BOBBY JEREMY – Male, 20’s, any ethnicity. Roy, a young man Bruce hires to do yard work; Pete, a mourner who visits the funeral home; Mark, a high school junior; Bobby Jeremy, the lead singer of a band in Alison’s imagination
