Playing to thousands of residents and visitors every night, they offer world-class artistry and an unmatched spirit of community in one of America’s greatest urban parks. This summer, the Festival offers up one of Shakespeare’s most dazzling and delightful comedies about the very different ways that we love and want to be loved. The director is SFSTL executive producer Tom Ridgely. We are committed to casting a diverse company. We invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for roles they most identify with. BREAKDOWN

[BIRON] Male, Early 20s. Any ethnicity. A young duke and one of the lords attending the King. Brilliant and acerbic. Fancies himself the observant outsider, and for the most part is. Extremely witty, but also has a brooding quality about him. A facile and original thinker with a dazzling gift for rhetoric, but inexperienced in the mysteries of love. The one skeptic of the King’s plans to abjure worldly pursuits in the quest for knowledge.

[KING] Male, Early 20s. Any ethnicity. The young King Ferdinand of Navarre. Somewhat grandiose but completely sincere. An idealist. A precocious statesman and highly educated, with the hint of obliviousness that comes with such a sheltered upbringing. Prince Hal he is not. The ringleader and mastermind of the group’s plans to forsake women, food, and sleep for study.

[PRINCESS] Female, Early 20s. Any ethnicity. The young Princess of France. Wise beyond her years. Poised, polished, and ready to prove herself. Has been entrusted by her ailing father with an extremely delicate and complicated diplomatic mission. Takes her role seriously, which sometimes calls for her remaining aloof, but has a mischievous side that she also likes to show. The most mature character in the play.

[ARMADO] Male, Late 30s – Early 60s. Hispanic. A Spanish knight and braggart. A fantastic and eccentric character. Ostentatious in speech in manner. A grand, old world Don Quixote who’s invented his own self-image out of a rich imagination. Given to exaggeration but has a basic decency and even nobility about him. Sees himself as a brave and gallant solider, until he falls suddenly, surprisingly, and whole-heartedly in love.

[BOYET] Male, 30s – 50s. Any ethnicity. A lord attending the Princess. Her chaperone and adviser. Avuncular if somewhat prim and pampered. A widower? A bachelor? Can be meddlesome.

[COSTARD] Male, 20s – 30s. Any ethnicity. A clown. A man of great appetites. Lusty and good-humored. Always looking out for himself. Clever, if not exactly bright. The ultimate self-preservationist.

[HOLOFERNES] Any gender, 30s-60s. Any ethnicity. A schoolmaster. Erudition itself. Extravagantly educated. Loves slipping into Latin. Sees him/herself as an expert in, well, everything. Loves an audience. Not always patient with others. But not unkind either.

[ROSELINE] Female, Early 20s. Any ethnicity. A young lady attending the Princess. Feisty. And fashionable. The spikiest personality in her group. Loves mixing it up and is good at it. Has a hardness and an edginess that covers a big yearning for connection. Nervy. Proud. Bickers fiercely with Biron.

[MOTH] Any gender, Teens. Any ethnicity. Armado’s page. Extremely clever. Witty. Ironic. A trickster and a cynic. Truly devoted to Armado, but has no illusions about him, or anyone. Practical.

[DUMAINE] Male, Early 20s. Any ethnicity. A young duke and one of the lords attending the King. The sweetest, most innocent, and tender of the four. Almost shy, but with an impish glint. When he falls, he falls hard. Perhaps even a hint of melancholy about him.

[NATHANIEL] Any gender, Late 20s – Early 50s. Any ethnicity. A curate. A devoted acolyte of Holofernes. Eager to advance his/her own learning, but more patient with those who have less. A gentle shepherd.

[LONGUEVILLE] Male, Early 20s. Any ethnicity. A young duke and one of the lords attending the King. Strapping and self-assured. Loves being part of a gang. Seizes on ideas with easy enthusiasm. A strong sense of right and wrong. Big energy.

[KATHERINE] Female, Early 20s. Any ethnicity. A young lady attending the Princess. Seems the good girl, but has a subversive streak. Sometimes keeps her distance, but really just wants to be accepted. Things have always come easy. Plays it cool.

[MARIA] Female, Early 20s. Any ethnicity. A young lady attending the Princess. The warmest and sweetest of the four, if not the brightest. But not above throwing shade. Loves her girls. Also into boys. Loves the chase.

[DULL] Male, 20s-50s. Any ethnicity. A constable. The name says it all. A blue collar public servant. Might have trouble seeing. And talking. And dressing himself.

[JACQUENETTA] Female, 20s. Any ethnicity. A dairymaid. Buxom, earthy, and also light. Has big dreams and a deeply romantic imagination.

[FORESTER/MARCADE] Male, 20s-50s. Any ethnicity. A forester and a messenger. A rugged outdoorsman and a mysterious emissary.
