BREAKDOWN

NOTE: Fleeing the Russian revolution and leaving behind a world of opulence and wealth, aristocrat Tamara de Lempicka and her beloved husband Tadeusz are forced to make a new life. In the rising tide of fascism, Tamara takes to painting to survive, and when she meets the free-spirited Rafaela, a prostitute on the fringes of Parisian society, she’s torn between the life she cherishes with her husband and the passion, ambition, and possibility awoken in her by her new muse. Inspired by the life of the artist who transformed herself from penniless refugee to star of the art world when the world itself teetered on chaos, “LEMPICKA” looks at the beauty and danger of one painter pursuing it all.

[TAMARA DE LEMPICKA] Female, any ethnicity, mid 30s—40s. Character ages 19—63. A survivor. An aristocrat who, amidst the Russian Revolution, is forced to leave behind a life of decadence and move to Paris. In Paris, she rebuilds her life via her art, while also balancing two lovers and her young daughter. She is steel, grit, determination, drive, passion, and hunger. The performer cast will portray the character throughout most of her life. Needs an excellent actor with a thrilling, powerhouse, contemporary high-belt singing voice. A leading lady capable for carrying a big show. PRINCIPAL—OFFER OUT

[RAFAELA] Female, artist of color, 30s—40s. A prostitute who becomes Tamara’s muse, model, and ultimately, lover. She is a master at the art of seduction, but finds herself in new territory when her feelings for Tamara surpass the physical. Known around town, she is tough, fiercely independent, alluring, brazen, and wry. A bit of the spirit of “original punk” (think Patti Smith), not traditionally feminine, an outsider, but of extremely high natural status. A woman ahead of her time. Needs an excellent actor and excellent singer. Alto. PRINCIPAL

[TADEUSZ LEMPICKI] Male, any ethnicity, 30s—40s. A Russian aristocrat. Married to Tamara de Lempicka. Arrogant, entitled, easily charming, and also deeply damaged. In Paris, he is a banker and a shell of the man he used to be, after being thrown in jail during the Russian Revolution. Strong tenor. PRINCIPAL—OFFER OUT

[MARINETTI] Male, any ethnicity, 30s—50s. An Italian Futurist and foil to Tamara. The embodiment of the patriarchy. Masculine, determined, cunning, and wildly charismatic. Wants to do away with the old order and ride the wave of Fascism to success. Excellent tenor. PRINCIPAL

[THE BARON] Male, any ethnicity, 40s—60s. One of Tamara de Lempicka’s first art collectors who is distinguished and kind-hearted. The Baron is high status, he knows it, and he uses that status (and his wealth) to advance the careers of artists he ‘discovers.’ Will also play other roles. Baritone/Bass. PRINCIPAL—OFFER OUT
