BREAKDOWN

Story line: One of the greatest stories ever told comes to life in the groundbreaking, iconic rock opera that reinvented musical theater for the modern age. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, this global blockbuster tells the story of the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, from the perspective of Judas Iscariot. As Christ’s followers grow more fervent, Judas must make his fateful choice between faith and betrayal. Filled with an exciting mix of musical styles that draw upon 1970s rock, gospel, folk, and funk themes, this contemporary imagining of the biblical tale features high-energy dance and powerful storytelling.

The Production brings the focus back to the show’s origins as a rock concept album, emphasizing a rock concert aesthetic rather than musical theater.

PRINCIPALS

[JESUS]
Rock tenor; 20s- 30s. Chest voice B2-Ab4, powerful falsetto/scream up to G5. This role demands a well-rounded baritone voice that also has a super extended upper register- virtuosity coupled with sensitive musicianship a must. Think James Taylor meets Steve Tyler.

A true “rock star”, comfortable addressing a group of 12 or an arena of 12,000. This role does not dance but must be comfortable moving. Please note if you can play acoustic guitar as it is preferred for the role.

[JUDAS]
Rock/soul tenor; 20s-30s. (E3-D4 (+). This role requires an agile and sensitive voice with access to extremely high registers across a full dynamic range. Stylistically drawing a great deal from soul music, useful reference points would be Stevie Wonder/Murray Head.

He is the antagonist of the show, concerned that fame is getting in the way of the message of social justice. Someone who can tell a story through a melody, with exquisite diction and intonation. This role does not dance but must be comfortable moving.

[MARY]
Belt mezzo; 20s –30s. (G#3-C5) A former prostitute, now follower of Jesus, grappling with her feelings and her faith. Seeking singers who can communicate her solo as more than just a simple love song. This role does not dance but must be comfortable moving. Drawing its influence from early 70s pop, this role requires musical simplicity & excellent phrasing. Think Joni Mitchell/Carol King. (No riffing required)

[PILATE]
Baritone or Baritenor; 30s – 40s. (A2-Bb4) A strong baritone with extended high register. Think Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant. A diverse musical journey through both acts requires a singer of great stillness, yet with the ability to tear the roof off in the final bars. Guitar skills preferred.

[ANNAS]
Male; 30s – 40s. (E3-D5) Funky high rock/soul tenor, with a great flair for swing & groove. Shrill, tightly wound, sadistic high priest. Strong Mover.

[CAIAPHAS]
Male, low bass (C#2-F4). 30s - 40s. A strong bass with a baritone range. Must have great feel for groove & an astonishing musical presence. Should look and act very cool. Strong Mover.
