LINDA: Late 50s, early 60s. English. She’s a medium who knows that what she does is just a trick, and yet, she has no concerns that she’s deceiving people. Linda is someone who very comfortably and deftly justifies seemingly contradictory stances. Moreover, she treats her work as though it’s the most ordinary thing in the world, never playing into the overtly mystical, woo-woo image of psychics. She undersells her remarkable claims, and this gives her a very sneaky kind of authority.

HILDA: Mid to late 30s. She believes she has some sort of access to the spirit world. She is persistently unassuming. She tip toes through her narration of the play. Even if she goes so far as to make a claim, she’s quick to back off it with a shrug or an “I don’t know.” Smitten with Linda. CAST

SYLVIA: 40s, somewhere right in between Hilda and Linda. Has a great deal of money; we’re never sure how. Also smitten with Linda and feels a bit put off by whatever relationship Linda seems to have with Hilda. There’s a risk of thinking that Sylvia’s stances and opinions are flimsy, but in fact, she honestly believes and seriously thinks through everything she says. She is genuine. CAST

JERRY: 40s. Linda’s American cousin. All we know is that he does some kind of work helping politicians with their campaigns. Always reasonable — can be frustratingly so. Never gets upset. Smitten with Hilda. CAST

A BRIGHT ROOM CALLED DAY
Written by Tony Kushner
Directed by Oskar Eustis
First Rehearsal: 9/23/19
First Performance: 10/29/19
Closing: 12/8/19
Extension Closing: 12/22/19
Anspacher Theatre
Off-Broadway DD Contract: $1,103/week

Tony Kushner, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, reunites with longtime collaborator and Public Theater’s Artistic Director Oskar Eustis in a scorching new version of his first play, the prescient 1985 masterwork suggesting the possibility of the Reagan counter-revolution eventually giving rise to American fascism. Agnes, an actress in Weimar Germany, and her cadre of passionate, progressive friends, are torn between protest, escape, and survival as the world they knew crumbles around them. Her story is interrupted by an American woman enraged by the cruelty of the Reagan administration, and a new character, grappling with the anxiety, distraction, hope, and hopelessness of an artist facing the once unthinkable rise of authoritarianism in modern America. Funny, brilliant, and devastating, this new production of A BRIGHT ROOM CALLED DAY revisits an epic work that takes a piercing look at the vulnerability of American democracy, and demands to know: when the devil takes up residence in your country…will you act?

ANNABELLA GOTCHLING [CAST]
XILLAH [CAST]
DIE ALTE [CAST]
ZILLAH [CAST]

SEEKING:
AGNES EGGLING: Female. 30s. Any ethnicity. An actress, most known for smaller roles in the German cinema. As the world she knows begins to disappear, she becomes paralyzed with horror and unable to act.

GREGOR ‘BAZ’ BAZWALD: Male. 30s. Any ethnicity. A gay man, vivacious and imaginative, who works at the Berlin Institute for Human Sexuality. He is fond of his own voice and very outspoken about his disdain for the current political climate.

PAULINKA ERDNUSS: Female. 30s. Any ethnicity. A decadent, alluring actress who loves gossip. She uses opiates to distract herself from her deep unhappiness. In her own words, she is “incapable of resisting anything.”

VEALTNINC HUSZ: Male. 40s. Any ethnicity. A Hungarian cinematographer, exiled for fighting as a Trotskyite during the 1918 Revolution. A vehement critic of fascism, he sleeps with his remaining eye open, due to his deep distrust of the mainstream establishment.

ROSA MALEK: Female. 20s-30s. Any ethnicity. A low-ranking Communist official. Eager to impress her superiors, she is very hard on herself. She believes deeply in discipline and justice.

EMIL TRAUM: Male. 20s-30s. Any ethnicity. A Communist official. His official rank is relatively low, but still higher than his colleague Malek, a fact he does not like to let her forget. Defensive and strategic, he is very careful to not let his emotions get the better of him.

GOTTFRIED SWETTS: Male. 50s-60s. Any ethnicity. The devil incarnate. He is elegant and imposing, strengthened by the doubts of his existence. He is summoned by Husz to illuminate the nature of evil one night for Agnes and Paulinka.

Mona Mansour, award-winning playwright and alum of The Public’s Emerging Writer’s Group, delves into the Palestinian struggle for home and identity in THE VAGRANT TRILOGY, a single epic story told in three parts. In 1967, Adham, a Palestinian Wordsworth scholar, goes to London with his new wife to deliver a lecture. When war breaks out at home, he must decide in an instant what to do—a choice that will affect the rest of his life. The two parts that follow explore alternate realities based on that decision. Each part in the trilogy speaks to the others, together painting a rare and moving picture of Palestinian displacement and a refugee’s life of permanent impermanence. Featuring six actors in 19 different roles, Mansour’s drama spans four decades and three generations of a family uprooted by war and politics. Obie Award winner and Drama Desk Award nominee Mark Wing-Davey directs this sweeping new epic about the poetry and pain of losing the place called home.
