BREAKDOWN

[POLONIUS]
Male. 60's. Father to Ophelia and Laertes. Not the typical “fuddy duddy” portrayal of this character. He is the Director of Intelligence. Calculating, precise, and rigid. His verbosity arises out of his desire to be overly thorough and accurate. He ruthlessly pursues surveillance, even of his own son, and uses his own daughter as a pawn in state affairs, losing his humanity in the process.

[OPHELIA]
20's 30's years old, female. Daughter to Polonius and sister to Laertes. In love with Hamlet. Kind, innocent, and trying to navigate an oppressively cruel, male-driven world. Enthralled by Hamlet’s wit and intellectual sensibility. A faithful daughter and sister. Please submit diverse actors for this role.

[FORTINBRAS/MARCELLUS/PROLOGUE]
30's to 40 years old. Male or Female - Fortinbras: The child of King Fortinbras of Norway, whom the late King Hamlet slayed in battle. Morally righteous and passionate. A strong leader. Marcellus: A security guard at Elsinore. First person to see the ghost and alert Hamlet to its presence. Spooked and concerned for Hamlet. Prologue: One of the players in the acting troupe. Please submit diverse actors, both male and female, for this role

[ROSENCRANTZ]
30's. Male. A high school friend of Hamlet who attempts to place himself and his friend Guildenstern in Hamlet's confidence but who is actually serving as an informant for the corrupt King Claudius. He is comically conservative, preppy, and out of his depth. Please submit actors of all ethnicities for this role.

[LAERTES]
Late 20's - 30's. Male. Polonius' son. Protective of his sister Ophelia. Passionate, reactive and can be very impatient. Laertes becomes fixated on revenging the death of his father and abuse of his sister. This character is a master fencer, so the actor playing this role is preferably excellent at stage combat, particularly modern fencing. Please submit actors of all ethnicities for this role.
