BREAKDOWN
[DAVID KOLOWITZ] Male, Age Range: late teen-late 20s. (Seeking adult actors 18+) He is determined to be an actor and a star, despite being a young Jewish delivery boy who lives with his working class parents in the Bronx. We follow David as he matures and comes of age romantically, emotionally and in his career dreams. Must have great comedic timing and be incredibly charming and charismatic. A young Ben Stiller. Bari-tenor/baritone. In the original play, this was Alan Arkiin’s Breakout role.
[MR. FOREMAN / ] Male, Age Range: 50s-70s. Kind, but no nonsense, owner of the small machine shop where David works. A traditionalist, he is protective of David and disapproves of his dreams of stardom. He is a little befuddled by the younger generation. Character singer. (Jack Gilford played Foreman in the movie) This actor will also play various other roles in the show.)
[WANDA] Female, Age Range: late teens-late 20s. (Seeking adult actors 18+) She is David’s solid, sensible girlfriend, who is actually a spitfire underneath the surface. She is devoted to David and the idea of marrying and settling down. She is loving and smart. A comedic ingenue. Her songs range from the sweet and lovely to a surprising belt comedy diatribe against MEN. Soprano mix and brassy belt. ( She has three numbers- 2 duets, and a knockout solo with back up. She is also in three of the group numbers- minimally)
[MARLOWE] Male, Age Range: 50s-70s. Domineering, overblown theatrical director/actor who has his own down on its heels theatre company in Manhattan in the 30’s.. He impatiently tries to teach David how to act or, in most cases, how to overact. In an hilarious fantasy sequence, he also plays David’s Hollywood (like John Gielgud in ‘Arthur’’ type-butler). He sings the brilliant ‘BUTLER SONG.’ Character baritone. (Very, noble but down on his luck Actor/ Director/ Empressario of his own theatre company. He was a great actor, now he is trying to get by with his own theatre during the depression. Jose Ferrer played Marlowe in the Movie.
[ANGELA MARLOWE] Female, Age Range: Late 20s-mid 40s. Marlowe’s Daughter and star of the theatre company. She is overly seductive, poetic and passionate. She survives on the passion of her art; she thinks she’s deeper than she is. She is beautiful, but there is something slightly off about her. A little bit of an aging ingénue. The role requires a bold actress with great comedic timing. Strong, versatile singer. Elaine May played Angela brilliantly in the movie. She has two feature numbers- one with her father and the other a show stopping torchsong. She is also in the group numbers briefly-
[MARVIN] Male, Age Range: Late teens-early 20s. (Seeking adult actors 18+) David’s quirky, excitable best friend. Good natured and supportive, he will do anything to help David achieve his dreams. This actor will also play various roles in the show. Baritone/Tenor. He will also be in the ensemble and play various other roles.
[MOTHER] Female, Age Range: 50s-60s. Although she’s David’s strong and overbearing but loveable mother. Although Jewish she belies the stereotype. Warm, caring, protective and funny, she is determined to make sure David becomes a druggist. Good character singer with a show biz belt. She has two solo’s character songs. She is also in the few group numbers.
[FATHER] Male, Age Range: 50s-60s. David’s caring, and accepting father. He may seem to be a bit of a push over but actually he is just tolerant and patient. He is more understanding of David’s dreams of becoming an actor, but it is still unknown territory to him. Character singer. Has one show-stopping Duet. Is also in the three group numbers in character.
[MISS B] Female, Age Range: 20s-late 30s. David’s dream woman and first big crush. She is beautiful and glamorous. The receptionist at the Hat Company where David makes his deliveries. This actress will play various other roles through the show. Good singer. Has one duet with David and is in the group numbers
[PIKE] Non Gender specific, Age Range: 30s-50s. The direct, no-nonsense stage manager for Marlowe’s theatre company. Requires a good character actor to play. Good singer. Pike is one quartet and is also plays strongly in the group numbers.
[HARRY HAMBURGER] Male, Age Range: 30s-40s. . Miss B’s boyfriend. He owns a Hat Factory. Strong and willful, in love with Miss B. He has one brief , terrific scene at the near the end of the play. He has to give David his Tuxedo right before David Goes on to make his debut. (Don Rickels played him in the movie). He will also be in the ensemble.
[ENSEMBLE WOMAN] Any age. Comic timing, great voices- play several roles throughout the show: The Pope, John Barrymore, Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, Mourners, Fans, Stage hands-etc) They are in the group numbers.
