BREAKDOWN

A sheet of ice sits in the desert of New Mexico. A mad eco-terrorist plants a bomb in order to save humankind. A beleaguered film crew tries to get in one last shot before losing the light. Continuity is a sly, biting comedy in six takes where storytelling and science collide with both hilarious and devastating consequences. The play asks, “How do we keep going when hope can seem as fictional as a Hollywood ending?” “How do we tell the stories that could shape our future?” and, perhaps most importantly, “What’s for lunch?”

seeking:

EVE/NICOLE:
[CAST] Female. 30s. White. EVE: An ecologist in a studio film about climate change. NICOLE: A thirty-something international movie star – the actress who is playing EVE. Mercurial and demanding, though she would insist she is totally reasonable. Anxious to be seen as intelligent and doesn’t want to be regarded as a diva. The pressures of fame weigh heavily on her. She masks her insecurity with prickly confidence…and a little cocaine.

ANNA/LILY:
Female. 20s. Black. ANNA: One of the top climatologists in the US, at 22. In a studio film about climate change. LILY: Early 20s, and, as she will quickly tell you, Nigerian-British and just out of RADA – the actress who is playing ANNA. This film is a big break for her professionally, but a daily slog as she tries to navigate the personalities of the more famous, create a performance her director is happy with, and take up the appropriate amount of space. Guarded, but increasingly fed up.

GEORGE/JAKE:
Male. 30s. GEORGE: A bad boy climate activist, in a studio film about climate change. JAKE: A good-looking guy who wishes he were a bad boy – the actor who is playing GEORGE. Mid-level famous, working hard to hold onto his looks, while also frustrated that he always has to play “the hot guy.” Privileged, kinda clueless, and self-involved, but basically pretty nice. Enjoys showing off by showing Lily the ropes and dishing gossip.

DAVID CAXTON:
Male. 50-something. White. Way too tan and fit to be a writer. 100% Hollywood animal. Is he a great writer? Maybe; maybe not. But he’s done very well. He’s part of the machine and good at working the system. He has the ease and charm of someone knows he belongs. He wrote this movie and “gave” it to Maria to direct. Maria is his ex. He’s facing a personal crisis that is challenging his notion of himself, this movie, and how invested he is in all of it.

MARIA:
A woman of color. Mid-late 40s. A first-time studio film director. Tenacious, tough, smart and patient. She’s had success on the festival circuit, but this is her shot at the big time, and she’s determined to get it right. Despite the numerous challenges, logistical, technical, and personal. She is all too aware that women don’t get to fail up. The grown-up in the room.

LARRY:
[CAST] Male. 60s. A climatologist. The science advisor on the film. A fish out of water. He knows what he knows, but that does not include anything about making movies or negotiating flamboyant personalities. Dry, factual, unemotional – though not without opinions or feelings. He operates at a different tempo, on a different timeline altogether, than these frantic artists who are trying to get the shot before they lose the light.

THE PA:
Early 20s. Any gender – male, female, trans, non-binary, fluid. Any ethnicity. The nameless, faceless person who is working right now to make your life better and you don’t even know it. Very young – like first job. Dry. Funny. Physical humor a plus.
