THE FLAMINGO KID
by Robert L. Freedman and Scott Frankel. Directed by Darko Tresnjak.
World Premiere.
First rehearsal: 4/2/19 Opening night: 5/24/19 Closing night: 6/16/19

The show takes place in 1963 in Brooklyn and at the predominantly Jewish beach club on Long Island called the El Flamingo.

JEFFREY WINNICK (18)
Lived in Brooklyn his entire life. Has just graduated from high school. Bright, open, a little naïve, great at cards. Must have superb, high baritone/tenor voice (up to “A”), with pop inflections and “money notes.”

CARLA SAMUELS (19)
From California, has real depth and a sense of humor. A budding feminist. The Brodys’ niece, Jeffrey’s summer romance. Requires strong, period pop-sounding belt with mix.

ARTHUR WINNICK (40’s-50’s)
From Brooklyn, works with his hands, a plumber and proud of it. Wants what he thinks is best for his son, not necessarily what Jeffrey wants. Can be warm and affectionate, but has a short fuse. Must sing very well, a “character” baritone (up to F).

RUTH WINNICK (40’s-50’s)
A Brooklyn housewife, Jeffrey’s mother. Warm, loving, bright. She worries. Tries to keep peace in the house. Must sing very well (mix).

PHIL BRODY (40’s-50’s)
Successful Long Island foreign car dealer, behaves as if he’s the King of the beach club, which he is. Larger than life personality, a big charmer—of everyone but his wife, Phyllis. Dark underside. Needs a strong high baritone with lots of vocal swagger (i.e. Bobby Darin), up to a G.

PHYLLIS BRODY (40’s-50’s)
Upper-middle-class Long Island. Jaded, bored, cynical, a snob. This isn’t the life she imagined for herself. Needs to sell a lyric more than a vocal powerhouse; but should sing well (belt).

HAWK (19)
Formerly of Brooklyn, now of Long Island, thinks he’s cool and a charmer. Confident and brash. Skipped college to gamble. Requires strong vocal ability, high baritone/tenor.

STEVE (19)
Formerly of Brooklyn, now of Long Island. Not as bright as Jeffrey, not as obnoxious as Hawk. Dates Joyce Brody. Requires strong vocal ability, high baritone/tenor.

JOYCE BRODY (19)
Upper-middle class Long Island. Carla’s cousin. Bright, sarcastic. Dates Steve. Must be vocally confident.

FORTUNE (18 years old, African-American)
A parking attendant at the Flamingo Club who is saving money to pay for college. Bright and athletic. Strong, pop-style high baritone, to F/G.

MRS. BAKALEINIKOFF (40-45)
A Flamingo club member who takes a special interest in the cabana boys.

ALEJANDRO (30-40s)
A dance instructor at the Flamingo Beach Club who is popular with the ladies.

ENSEMBLE
Characters are late teens-Mid 50’s. Seeking strong singers/dancers to portray various roles, including card players, parents, teens and employees at the Flamingo Club and in the neighborhood of Brooklyn throughout the show.
