BREAKDOWN

Bhangin’ It is a bhangra dance musical, and the choreography samples a wide, multicultural range of dance styles and traditions. Company members on the “Bengal Tigers” team should be strong bhangra and Bollywood dancers, with experience in classical Indian forms and hip hop a plus. Company members on the “Settlers of Catan” should be strong, enthusiastic movers, with experience in other dance styles a plus (hip hop, ballet, salsa, etc.).

Storyline: Bhangin’ It draws inspiration from the high-stakes world of intercollegiate competitive bhangra - a traditional Indian folk dance morphed into a good ole American dance-off. The story follows a biracial student, Mary, who gets kicked off her bhangra team for not being Indian enough. When she forms a team of her own, cultural authenticity and cultural pluralism are set on a collision course in this brash, intoxicating and gripping new musical.

MARY – OFFER MADE-- 20s female, biracial (half South Asian/half white). Mezzo soprano / belt; strong dancer (kathak, bhangra and Bollywood, familiarity with modern / hip-hop a plus). Our heroine; positive attitude, figuring out where she fits in the world. (Principal)

SUNITA – OFFER MADE- 20s female, South Asian American. Mezzo soprano / belt; strong mover. Ride or die BFFs with Mary, opinionated and hilarious. (Principal)

BILLY –20s male, Latinx. Bari/Tenor; strong dancer. Mary's love interest, a music nerd / charismatic slacker who coasts on good looks and charm. (Principal)

PRITHI – 20s female, South Asian American. Mezzo / belt; strong dancer (bhangra, kathak). A no-nonsense ‘bhangra assassin’ who can't stand Mary, extremely political. A part of the Bengal Tiger team, (Principal)
