Equity actor/singers for various roles.

BECOMING NANCY takes place in East Dulwich, a district of south East London. All actors will play characters from this area.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a cut of a 70s pop/rock or contemporary theatre song showing range. Bring picture and resume.

BREAKDOWN

MAXIE BOSWELL
Age 17, new boy to the school. Physically athletic, confident beyond his years, and with a mesmeric charisma David Starr is instantly attracted to. Whilst being made captain of the football team, Maxie also gets cast as Bill Sykes in the school play. Not afraid to rise to the challenge of a bully. Pop tenor voice.

EDDIE STARR
30s-40s, David’s father. Kath’s husband. Stuck in his ways. His main focus in life is his pigeons, which he keeps in the back yard. Doesn’t understand women. Doesn’t’ really understand his son. A cab driver. Baritone voice.

AUNT VAL
30s. Kath’s sister. David’s Aunt. Has had a string of unfulfilled relationships with me. Adores David and is the person closest to him that understands him. Grounded and strong in her opinions yet open-minded. Sharp-tongued. Great alto belt voice.


OFFERS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPAL ROLES:

DAVID STARR
Age 16, witty, sharp, and strong-minded. Fashion aware and loves his music. In a world of conformity, David is searching for something else. Physically not the natural athlete, he uses his wit to fight against the bullying he faces in school. Gets cast as Nancy in the school play as he has the best singing voice in the school. Great pop tenor voice. (OFFER HAS BEEN MADE FOR THIS ROLE)

FRANCES BASSEY
Age 16, David’s best friend since childhood. Frances also struggles with a bullying culture and faces racism for being black, something she is determined to change. She is a strong support for David but not afraid to challenge him. Strong-minded and sharp. Great pop-belt voice. (OFFER HAS BEEN MADE FOR THIS ROLE)

KATH STARR
30s -early 40s, David’s mother. Doesn’t necessarily understand David’s humor but has a deep love for her son. Trapped in a loveless marriage to Eddie. Alto/mezzo belt with a big range. (OFFER HAS BEEN MADE FOR THIS ROLE)

HAMISH McCLARNON
mid 30s, Scottish drama teacher at David’s school. Openly gay and confident man who is strict but fair and respected by the pupils. His encouraging teaching style is the opposite of his teaching nemesis, Bob Lord, the school PE teacher. Musical theatre tenor voice. (OFFER HAS BEEN MADE FOR THIS ROLE)
