BREAKDOWN

Antonio Salieri: ages 50 through 80; Ambitious court composer, who has promised to dedicate his life to God in return for fame as a composer. He finds success until Mozart arrives on the scene. Once Salieri hears Mozart’s work, he feels betrayed by God and seeks to destroy Mozart as way to get back at God. (ROLE CAST - SEEKING UNDERSTUDY ONLY)

SEEKING:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:
ages 20 to 35: Small, pallid, large-eyed man; he is an extremely restless man, his voice light and high; his manner, excitable and volatile. A child prodigy and a genius composer, Mozart seeks a position in the emperor’s court. He is extravagant, arrogant, juvenile, foul-mouthed, and impulsive in social and political situations. Unable to secure a steady income at court, he becomes a poverty-stricken alcoholic and struggles to survive, but remains always aware of his musical genius.

Joseph II:
40-60. Emperor of Austria and brother of Marie Antoinette: Dapper, cheerful figure, largely pleased with himself and the world. Though somewhat aloof and disconnected, Joseph II enjoys and supports Mozart’s music. Ultimately, he is persuaded by Salieri and others at court to cut him off.

Johann Kilian von Strack:

55: Groom of the Imperial Chamber; a stiff and proper court official: favors Opera in German.

Count Orsini-Rosenberg:
60: Director of the Imperial Opera: Plump and supercilious, a stickler for following the rules and regulations: favors Opera in Italian.

Baron van Swieten:
50: Prefect of the Imperial Library - cultivated and serious. He is known as “Lord Fugue” and is ardent Freemason. He can be vindictive, dominating, and demanding. Likes Serious Opera

Venticelli 1, Venticelli 2:
20- middle age: purveyors of fact, rumour and gossip. Speak with the urgency of men who have ever been first with the news.

Constanze Weber:
Early 20s: Pretty, high spirited young woman. Mozart marries her against his father’s wishes. Though cavalier, playful, and juvenile, she loves and supports Mozart through every humiliation and hardship and is even willing to sacrifice herself for him.

Katherina Cavalieri:
20; Salieri’s promising pupil who has affairs with both Salieri and Mozart.

Teresa Salieri
Wife of Salieri: 30-40: a padded placid upright lady

Ensemble & Chorus:
The cast includes several silent. These parts will create an ensemble and chorus that together drive the action of the play. Although non-speaking, the following are featured: Major-Domo, Salieri’s Valet: older man; thin and dry, Salieri’s Cook: older man: somewhat heavy, Servant 1, Servant 2, Kapelmeister Bonno, Priest
