Interview: Joshua Whitson of SHE LOVES ME at The Village Players Of Birmingham says It's a Funny Love Story about Two People who Perfectly Wrong for Each Other!

She Loves Me is currently running at Village Players of Birmingham to close out their 95th season. The romantic musical comedy with book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Jerry Bock will play for two more weekends - ending May 20th. The Tony award-winning show premiered on Broadway in 1963 and has had award-winning revivals in 1993, 2000, and 2016. BroadwayWorld Detroit had a quick chance to speak with one of the performers of Village Players' production, Joshua Whitson, about his role and how he feels about She Loves Me - "a classic tale that will keep the audience laughing and smiling throughout!"

BroadwayWorld Detroit: Can you give me a brief background of your theatre career for our readers as an introduction?
Joshua Whitson: I graduated from Michigan State University with a BFA in theatre and have been performing regionally for the past few years, as well as doing commercials and industrial work. Some of the larger companies that I have performed with are a touring Shakespeare company out in NYC called The Glass Eye, Playhouse on Park in Connecticut and Quest Theatre Ensemble in Chicago.

BWW Detroit: How would you describe She Loves Me in your own words?
Joshua Whitson: She Loves Me is a classic love story about two people who are perfectly wrong for each other. It is charming, funny and heart-warming tale of unsuspecting lovers.

BWW Detroit: How would you describe your character?
Joshua Whitson: The character that I play in this show, Georg, is a dreamer. He has fallen head over heels (literally and figuratively) for a girl, penned as Dear Friend, that has been sending him anonymous letters.

BWW Detroit: How did you prepare for the role of Georg in She Loves Me?
Joshua Whitson: This production has been so unique to me as an actor. I typically try to prepare for a production with a lot of research and script work. However, I was brought into the production almost three weeks into the rehearsal process. The only knowledge I had of the production going in was that it had just been revived on Broadway a few years ago. So I had to just dive right in, finding the show and the character organically.

BWW Detroit: Do you have favorite moment or favorite song in the show?
Joshua Whitson: Act One ends with my favorite lines of the show, Amalia laments to the waiter because she has been waiting to meet Dear Friend - i.e. my character Georg. She says, "I've waited my whole life for him, what's two hours?"

BWW Detroit: What makes Village Players of Birmingham production of She Loves Me special?
