Last year 3rd Law Dance / Theater presented " Lost in Place " to sold out audiences. On June 9th there is one more opportunity to see this original evening of dance / theater. " Lost in Place, " created by 3rd Law Co - Founders Katie Elliott and Jim LaVita, explores the idea of a ' sense of place ', particularly the theme of losing a sense of place.

The ways that people experience such loss of place - - by choice, by force, by chance - - are myriad. At the turn of the 20th century, millions of Southern and Eastern Europeans voluntarily left their home places, while just a few years before thousands of Native Americans were forcibly relocated. ' Lost places ' can also be more than just geographic locations. Real or imagined places of the heart, such as childhood or family, also represent lost places, as does death, the place of no return, the journey with the ultimate " one - way ticket. "

Humans cultivate a deep feeling of belonging, cultural identity, and personal narrative by identifying and memorializing the places they arrive from and to where they return. If we have no tangible item to attach to a memory, how do we not forget ? What memories do we take with us and what do we leave behind ? What unifies and divides us on our journey ? " " Lost in Place " addresses all these questions. Using images that evoke lost places, such as a tapestry of shoes, suitcases, and modes of transportation from tricycles to trains, 3rd Law comments on the rational and affective sides of these sometimes heartbreaking " loss of place " situations as sources both of humor and of reflection. No matter where you are from or where you are going, your life is a geographical, spiritual and temporal journey. We are either " here " or " there, " we experience a " then " and " now, " and we contemplate the " before " on our journey to " after. " Everyone experiences a beginning and an end ; the only difference is the length of that arc and the details between point A and B. Perhaps noticing the similarities can evoke compassion for the differences.

ABOUT THE MOVEMENT

Choreographer Katie Elliott uses unique methods to develop physical expressions drawn from the evening's theme. The movement for this evening focuses on the individual identity of each performer / character. Using the structure of a social security number as a framework, Elliott offers prompts to create these identities by using positive and negative personality traits and individual story expressed through gesture. Throughout the evening, these gesture phrases melt into one another as the individual relates more and more to the identity of the group. " The dancers are intensely involved in creating the movement, " says Elliott, " The magic is how individual interpretation becomes unified when informed by the same choreographic direction. "
