BWW Previews: FINDING NEVERLAND at The Playhouse

The timing could not be more perfect to see a production that inspires the soul and uplifts the heart. FINDING NEVERLAND comes to The Playhouse February 7-10. As a country we are numbed by all the divisiveness and rancor. This magical creation will salve the vitriol and hate, if only for a few hours.

The musical is based on the Academy Award winning movie and directed by the visionary Diane Paulus. (In 2014 she was Time Magazine's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She was nominated as Best Director for her revival of HAIR and won the award in 2013 for her revival of PIPPIN).
FINDING NEVERLAND tells the incredible story behind one of the world's most beloved characters: Peter Pan. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four Young Brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys' enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever. The magic of Barrie's classic tale springs spectacularly to life in this heartwarming theatrical event.
FINDING NEVERLAND is "far and away the best musical of the year!" (NPR).

My two exes' constantly accused me of never growing up, so FINDING NEVERLAND is my theatrical doppelganger.

I had an opportunity to chat with Emmanuelle Zeesman (Mrs. Du Maurier). The book is based on a true story. A veteran performer, Zeesman states that 'this is the most gratifying theatrical experience I have ever had". Aside from her remarks regarding the love for her cast and crew, "the audience response is the warmest and most heartfelt in my career".

Zeesman's own fascination with theatre began at age 10. She attended an all girl's school and the production was FIDDLER. She was Tevye, beard, fat suit and all. From that she followed her dream to become a professional.

Ensemble players portray the Indians and the lost boys. The audience is packed with kids and many show up in costume. Zeesman's favorites are little girls who come as Tinkerbell.

In the accompanying video, there is a dog that must be the same pooch that was in Delaware Theatre Company's BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE a few years back. I commented in my review that the way he responded there was no way that was a dog, but a midget wrapped in labradoodle fur. Zeesman commented that he knows all his cues and never misses an entrance.

We all need some inspiration. We all need some fantasy. This is the show. When you believe,,,you can fly!
