South Coast Repertory opens the 2018-19 Theatre for Young Audiences series with Nate the Great, Nov. 2-18. The musical, based on the book by Marjorie W. Sharmat, has been adapted for the stage with book and lyrics by John Maclay and music and lyrics by Brett Ryback. Kari Hayter directs the fun show on the Julianne Argyros Stage. Tickets are on sale now at www.scr.org.

The story is about Nate the Great, the world's greatest kid detective: he loves solving mysteries-almost as much as eating pancakes. When Annie's special painting of her dog, Fang, goes missing, Nate's on a new case! Did Fang bury it? Is Rosamond, who prefers cats over dogs, up to foul play? Nate searches for clues and gathers the facts in this clever musical that teaches us to see the world in new ways.

"Nate the Great promises to be a lot of fun for the entire family," said dramaturg Andy Knight. "Nate-the boy at the story's center-is a tenacious, hyper-focused young detective. But most importantly, he's a good friend, who's determined to help the people he cares for. And in doing so, he learns a handful of important lessons, from keeping an open mind to the importance of art in everyday life. Audiences will no doubt fall in love with Nate and all his friends, the musical's humor and adventure, and its bright and beautiful score."

Sharmat is the author of the popular Nate the Great book series. She has written more than 130 books for children and teens, which have won awards including Book of the Year by the Library of Congress or have become selections by the Literary Guild.
