Kunqu Opera Returning Home on a Snowy Night is adapted from the drama with the same name by WU Zuguang.

During the Republic of China, WEI Liansheng is a male actor who specializes in playing female roles in Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera. He is very famous in Nanjing and has many fans including the court president SU Hongji. WEI Liansheng lives on performing for the nobles, but he never bents his knees to them. After an accidental meeting with Yuchun, the concubine of SU Hongji, WEI Liansheng and Yuchun become close friends. Meanwhile, SU Hongji is investigated for smuggling opium. He tries to bribe Censor XU Fucheng with Yuchun, which makes Yuchun realize that she is merely a tool. She resists desperately. On the birthday of SU Hongji, WEI Liansheng is forced to perform a pornographic play and is humiliated. As the underclass people, WEI Liansheng and Yuchun both long for dignity and freedom. They decide to elope. However, their plan is sabotaged by a villain. WEI Liansheng is expelled from Nanjing and can't return for 20 years. Yuchuan is taken to outside of the captial with XU Fucheng as a bride. WEI Liansheng and Yuchun make an appointment to meet each other in Nanjing after 20 years.

20 years later, on a snowy day in Nanjing, old SU Hongji sees XU Fucheng, but he doesn't see Yuchun sitting in the rickshaw. In the snow, Yuchun is looking for WEI Liansheng anxiously. In the windy and snowy night, there seem to be someone coming from a distance...
