After first premiering 140 years ago, local Calgary company DIY Theatre is thrilled to present a refreshed version of Isben's classic, with an exciting Alberta twist. A Doll's House: Wild Rose runs from April 5 - 13, 2019 at Motel Theatre in Arts Commons.

When it first premiered in Denmark, A Doll's House shook the theatre world. Adapted from the original text, A Doll's House: Wild Rose finds Nora, a married woman, who lacks self-fulfillment in a male-dominated world - determining her destiny disrupts society's foundation. But what happens when Nora finds herself in present-day Alberta? Does she face a similar dilemma? How have her options changed? And more importantly, does she choose a new beginning?

Directed by Alberta's Kaleigh Richards and adapted by Calgarians Tereasa Maillie, Christi Dos Santos-Wing and Shelby Reinitz, A Doll's House: Wild Rose also features a cast of Albertan actors working with updated and modern text, and promises to be a refreshing take on the classic.

"We kept Ibsen's original focus: questioning the traditional roles of men and women, the continued acceptance that all women want children, and that women cannot be themselves in modern society. Nora is that woman. Unsure of who she actually is, as she always has the perfection screen up around her," said Maillie. "Since my first read I've wondered if this classic play can still make a strong impact today and I think that it can. Adapting it was a challenge, as we wanted to make sure it would translate to a modern audience."

"Audiences who are familiar with the classic will enjoy the new twists, while those new to the work will still walk away with a sense of why this is a timeless tale," added Dos Santos-Wing.
