BWW Previews: THE HATE U GIVE Movie Release Bumped Up 2 Weeks!

This week, Fox2000 announced that because THE HATE U GIVE has had such strong word of mouth, it will release two weeks early. It will premiere in limited release on October 5th, expand on October 12th, and go wide on its original release date of October 19th. Depending on where you live, you may be able to catch it up to two weeks early.

The movie already has great buzz on social media and currently sits at a rare 100% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

THE HATE U GIVE is hyped to be one of the most important movies of the year, especially considering the novel has spent the last 79 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers List since it debuted last February--and many of those weeks have been spent at #1, where it is residing once more this week. THE HATE U GIVE is Angie Thomas' first novel and has already won or been shortlisted for several awards, including the prestigious National Book Aard Longlist, Michael L. Printz Award, William C. Morris Award, and Coretta Scott King Award. Her sophomore novel, ON THE COME UP, will release in February 2019.

THE HATE U GIVE stars Amandla Stenberg (Everything, Everything, The Darkest Minds, The Hunger Games) as Starr Carter, a teenager who witnesses a police officer shoot and kill her best friend, Khalil, played by Algee Smith (Detroit, The New Edition Story). Starr lives in a poor neighborhood, but attends a prep school with much wealthier classmates. Her two worlds collide with the shooting and help Starr find her voice and stand up for what she believes is right. The movie is directed by George Tillman Jr. (Notorious, Men of Honor, The Longest Ride) and also stars K.J. Aha (Riverdale), Sabrina Carpenter (Girl Meets World, Sofia the First), Common (Wanted, The Suicide Squad), Regina Hall (Scary Movie, Black-ish), Russell Hornsby (Fences, Grimm), and Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, several Marvel Avengers and Captain Americamovies as Falcon).

Here's a full summary for the novel THE HATE U GIVE:

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what reallywent down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.
