Triskelion Arts Presents LaneCoArts

Triskelion Arts presents LaneCoArts in Shouts and Murmurs, a repertory of three new works, held at 8 pm on October 25, 26, and 27, 2018. The centerpiece of each evening is two works by choreographer Lane Gifford, artistic director of LaneCoArts: "Then There Are None" and a premiere entitled "Askew". A third work, "Star Tracks and Collapsar," has been choreographed by guest choreographer Guanglei Hui. The program explores themes of culture, contemporary politics and life cycles. Shouts & Murmurs will be held at Triskelion Arts' Muriel Schulman Theater, 106 Calyer Street, Brooklyn, NY, with the entrance on Banker Street.

The Constitution of The United States is the basis for "Then There Are None," choreographed by Gifford in collaboration with LaneCoArts dancers and featuring video design by Marcus Bonila/WORKedit. Elements from The Constitution, as well as the expression "E Pluribus Unum" (the original motto of this country, as created by the Founding Fathers in 1782), are translated to movement expression. "Then There Are None" analyzes the colliding beliefs that are shaping this country through five performers entrenched in individual convictions. "Askew," a companion piece to "Then There Are None," looks at specific examples of alienation as exemplified through sectors of society such as business, technology, literary and artistic that are polarized and askew. Both works feature text and music compilations by Gifford, and performances by talented Nick Daley, Gabriel Berger, Julien Frei, Rachael Oczkus, Madeline Meyer, and Yuriko Hiroura.

"Star Tracks and Collapsar," choreographed by Guanglei Hui, is a collaboration between Hui and Yahui Lu (concept and design). This work follows the evening's theme of cultural and personal discord, by looking at the broader implication behind the individual journey towards equilibrium. The metaphor of an orbit or loops is employed to signify disoriented human reactions to each other and their world. The work integrates vivid video design by Sha Huang and an original score by Yin-Han Zoe Yang. The piece is executed by the dancers Yuriko Hiroura, Jordan Ryder, Miranda Viars, Hannah Maria and Evelyn Bennett Lfiegbu.

After attending Purchase College Conservatory of Dance where she received a BFA and MFA, Lane Gifford founded LaneCoArts in 2006 with a mission to create physically charged dance dramas that reflect meaningful social issues and expand the language of movement through lenses of drama, visual arts, film and sound. In her dance theater works, Gifford explores the concept of communication in today's technologically driven world through a self-referential process of collaboration with other artists where the juxtaposed creative languages, engender a process of cross-pollination. LaneCoArts performances include: Jacob's Pillow, New York International Fringe Festival, Dixon Place, Le Poisson Rouge, New York Theater Workshop, 92nd St. Y, Judson Church/STUFFED, DANCENOW, Boston Center For The Arts/Mills Gallery, Dance New Amsterdam RAW Directions, ITE Dance Festival, McNight Solo Artist Performance/Minneapolis, University Settlement, Bryant Park Festival, Dance Place/Washington DC and Spring To Dance Festival/St. Louis MO.

Originally from China, Guanglei Hui, is an independent artist, choreographer, dancer and teacher. He is artistic director of Cross Move lab and a co-founder of the Touch Contact Improvisation Festival. He currently is an adjunct professor at Queens College. Hui has toured internationally to numerous countries from Russia, China, and Taipai and danced for artist such as Shen Wei and Margaret Jenkins.

Renowned for her multi-arts approach, "Lane Gifford packs delicious movement into [her work]," reported Quinn Batson of offoffoff.com about her piece, "land•scape n." "The combination is breathtakingly good. She also chooses music well, tossing in a spicy throwdown section that drips street energy and amps the landscape. The movers are exceptional; the men move with silky power and the women with solid electricity."

LaneCoArts is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
