Dorrance Dance With Toshi Reagon And BIGLovely At BRIC Celebrate! Brooklyn Festival, 6/28 BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, now in its 40th season, presents The Blues Project, combining the exceptional dance company Dorrance Dance with the elemental musical force that is Toshi Reagon & BIGLovely. Created by Michelle Dorrance, Derick K. Grant, Toshi Reagon, and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, The Blues Project brings together today's best tap artists, musicians, and choreographers in an innovative evening of rhythm, original live music, explosive energy, and raw emotion. The work reveals "a deep merging of forms: As Ms. Reagon's music envelops the dancing, the dancing seeps through to the last chord and sometimes even beyond it" (The New York Times). The performance, which takes place at the Prospect Park Bandshell (9th St. & Prospect Park West) is free to the public (with a suggested $5 contribution at the gate) and begins at 8:00pm on June 28.

Dorrance Dance, founded by Artistic Director and 2015 MacArthur Fellow Michelle Dorrance, honors and expands on the uniquely beautiful tradition and history of tap dance to push it forward-rhythmically, technically, and conceptually. Following the company's inaugural performance in 2011 that garnered a Bessie Award for "blasting open our notions of tap," Dorrance Dance has performed at major venues and festivals across the United States and around the world to wide acclaim.

Toshi Reagon has moved audiences of all kinds with her big-hearted, hold-nothing-back approach to rock, blues, R&B, country, folk, spirituals, and funk. Her band BIGLovely has been an NYC institution since 1996, and she has shared stages with the likes of Nona Hendryx, Elvis Costello, Ani DiFranco, Pete Seeger, Dar Williams, Lizz Wright, and Me'shell NdegéOcello. Her performances with her mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon, a civil rights activist and founder of the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, are legendary.

Of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, Billboard writes, "In the crowded summer festival season, BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! stands apart." Since it began in 1979 as a catalyst for a burgeoning Brooklyn performing arts scene, and to bring people back into Prospect Park after years of neglect, the Festival has become one of the city's foremost summer cultural attractions. Winner of the Village Voice Readers' Poll and Critics' Picks for "Best Free Concert Series," BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival is New York City's longest-running summer outdoor performance festival. Over its 40-year history, the Festival has presented more than 2,000 artists, drawing a diverse audience upwards of 200,000 each season. Time Out New York writes, "Catching one of these gigs is guaranteed to be a highlight of your summer show-going season, whether you're seeing a buzzy indie-rock band, a classic soul or funk group, or one of the best hip-hop artists around."

As part of its 40th year anniversary season, BRIC has commissioned HEDERA, a monumental light structure by Grimanesa Amorós, the interdisciplinary New York-based Peruvian artist who has "built a reputation for dazzling light installations that suggest the topographies of distant planets" (The New York Times T Magazine). HEDERA will be installed at the Prospect Park Bandshell as a special element of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival from June 5 to August 11, where many thousands of visitors from Brooklyn and beyond will be able to interact with the sculpture.
