Invited dress should be in the coming days!

SYNOPSIS: In William Shakespeare's royal-family tragedy, the aging King Lear divides his estate between his three daughters, ultimately refusing his youngest and favorite her share because she won't publicly admit her love for him. The decision leads to chaos and treachery within the kingdom and madness for its monarch.

Previews begin February 28

What is the running-time for this play? I know Shakespeare plays tend to be long.

Unless there are massive cuts, you should expect it to be at least 3 hours -- likely more. When Glenda Jackson did it in London a few seasons ago, it was 3:30.

So interested in the concept behind the production.  Jackson’s last Lear was quite modern and a bit experimental.  Curious to see what direction the production grew went in.

Whoever goes this week, please report back!

Please please report back!!! After seeing The Ferryman I've realized I truly am into epic dramas, so this seems to fit that bill just perfectly. I'm hoping to check it out. Will be a fun battle between elaine May and Jackson for the tony!

Good news:  Just purchased a ticket on TDF

Bad news:  3:30 hours

Big time investment, monetarily not at all

All the evening performances start at 7, so that could be an indicator of the run time.

Luckily, there are 5 weeks of previews, so perhaps it'll be down to 3:15 or even 3 by Opening Night.

I don't mind length but I do need to know beforehand if there will be 1 or 2 intermissions/breaks. I know Ferryman has 1 intermission plus a 3-4 min break (which was helpful!)

Going on Saturday—so hype! Snagged one of the cheap balcony seats, since I’ve heard good things about the Cort’s balcony!

Stupid question, but is it normal for full casts to be announced this late?

No. Not unheard of, but not typical. However, this producer is a very unique specimen (see: Mockingbird thread)

If this show is running 3.5 hours, the first night thoughts will be showing up in a few minutes.

I’m hoping the delay in posting first preview reviews is because members are having to interrupt writing lengthy reports to look up new adjectives in their thesauruses to find ways to capture the joy of what they just experienced.

The first review on ShowScore praises Jackson and calls the staging fresh, but says it ran 3 hours and 45 minutes.

The last revivals of The Iceman Cometh and Angels in America ran about 4 hours and 8 hours each, respectively and I found both intoxicating. If a show is good then the time length shouldn’t matter.

Eight hours of Kushner’s contemporary text is much different than four hours of Shakespeare for me and I’m sure many others.
