After the SAG awards last night, where Lady Gaga again didn't win the Best Actress award, does this mean that the the many times nominated, but has never won Glenn Close finally get the Oscar that she deserves?   Before "The Wife" even opened, I read an article that said that this performance would be her Oscar performance.  What does everyone think?...

Yes, the industry's most famously unrewarded second banana is finally winning an Oscar.

The first time she was nominated of "The World According to Garp", I wanted her to tie at the Oscars with Lesley Ann Warren for "Victor, Victoria"...

She’ll win this year, not for THE WIFE (which was good but not amazing) but for her entire career.

Agreeing with Jordan 1000%. It's not THAT great but it's about time she has one.

Same with Sandra Bullock, her role wasn't that great but it was more of a career Oscar.

With that being said, I expect this will be the most abysmal Oscars in recent history.

I also will predict that on Oscar night when her name is read, the entire audience will give her an extended standing ovation...

I agree with Jordan. This award will be more for her overall career...not just for “The Wife”.

When she said on the red carpet that she is the most comfortable around actors she seemed to hit the nail on the head. I have seen her attending Broadway productions and interacting with waiters in restaurants. She is kind of shy in public.

Plus, voters have the opportunity to award Gaga anyway for Best Song. Both women get to win on Oscar night- which is undoubtedly how many AMPAS members will be viewing it.

Good point.

Ill be thrilled for her. I happened to really like her performance, but her body of work deserves this recognition.

Yes, Close will win for a movie that nobody has seen or gives a rat's ass about. (Yawn.) But Gaga's performance will be the one that is remembered. I do, however, expect Gaga to take home the Oscar for Best Song, so at least there's that. The show, on the other hand, will be an unmitigated disaster. I wouldn't be surprised if it winds up being the lowest rated telecast in Oscar history.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it winds up being the lowest rated telecast in Oscar history."

I agree and I have not watched one for several years. They are long and boring and you can get the results online. I really don't care what people are wearing and the political acceptance speeches get tedious. Award shows do not get good ratings anymore and I wonder how long it will be before the Tony Awards show will be on CBS.

I watched all the nominated performances, and then some, and I would have gladly voted for Glenn Close to win. It's actually between her and Colman. I would not have nominated Lady Gaga if given the choice. But I also would not have nominated Yalitza Aparicio either. Lady Gaga was lucky that the media campaign and media hype took that performance as far as it did. I think her nomination is an award of itself.

Also, it seems you're arguing that Lady Gaga should win due to her being more famous with the younger crowd, which is it's own narrative beyond actual performance. Lady Gaga was expected to win at the Golden Globes but that didn't help the GG's ratings much. She makes all kinds of appearances at the VMAs and Grammys and their ratings are also low compared to even the Oscars, whose ratings have been the subject of many write-ups. That's the nature of the beast right now.

It's fine if you think Lady Gaga should win, but don't bash Glenn Close who did nothing more but get a movie she had been wanting to make for fourteen years actually made, get great reviews for it (if you actually read the reviews rather than go by percentages/scores on Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic) with some of the reviews calling it her career's best work (which is saying a lot), and finally got the timing right to win an Oscar. We all know to win one isn't easy. It takes the material, the narrative, and timing. Things seem like they are falling to place for Glenn Close. Maybe if Lady Gaga finds herself back at these awards and people are saying she's only winning for being "overdue" for ASIB, then you'll remember what you said about Close here.

Glenn never won because she was never...the best in her categories.

I think ASIB has legs, unlike The Wife, which most people will never see. Many people voting for her have no interest in even seeing the film. They're checking her name on the ballots because after her Golden Globe speech, the world was reminded that she has never won. That narrative caught fire, and here we are. She's a lock.

Wow, you have a right to your opinion, but why you bashing Close, I mean what did she do to you? Who are you to say nobody cares about it or wants to watch it- do you some how speak for everyone? SMH

That means people who watched ASIB didn't think Lady Gaga was good enough to overcome that. If Lady Gaga was that good she would have won as if people really cared about a performance that much, then they would overtake a narrative of a performance they did not see. Glenn Close had to overcome like a multi-million dollar campaign orchestrated by Warner Bros. on ASIB and Gaga's behalf and that ain't easy. For one reason or the other, it looks like Lady Gaga's performance wasn't inspiring enough people to vote for her.

This whole discussion reminds me of when "Moulin Rouge" came out and the amazing performance that Nicole Kidman gave.  I remember being really excited watching the Oscars that year and wondering what her acceptance speech would be.  Imagine my surprise, along with I am sure many others when they announced Halle Berry's name instead, having only won the SAG award and National Board of Review award for Best Actress.  Thankfully Nicole Kidman won the Oscar the following year for the very much less flashy performance in "The Hours"...

How in God's name am I bashing Glen Close? And how did I indicate that I was speaking for anyone but myself? I said that nobody cares about or wants to see her movie. Obviously, I'm speaking in general terms. Obviously, there are at least a few people (like you) who cared enough to see the movie and enjoyed her performance in it. Good for you. I just saw it a few days ago when it became available digitally. Frankly, I thought it was a big snore. Completely forgettable. And Close's performance was no better or worse than anything she's done before. IMO, Gaga's performance in ASIB  runs circles around Close's in WIFE. And that's why I think she should win the Oscar. And, yes, your'e right. I'm entitled to my opinion.

"Close will win for a movie that nobody has seen or gives a rat's ass about. (Yawn.)But Gaga's performance will be the one that is remembered". You're basically saying that nobody wants to see the movie or gives a crap about it, or as you so eloquently put 'a rat's ass about" and nobody's going to remember it or her performance. Also if Close does win, I'm pretty sure people will remember this film since it broke what was the record for the actress with the most nominations without a win. You have the right to want Gaga to win, but why do you have to knock Glenn Close in the process?

All the money thrown into a campaign cannot trump Glenn's overdue status, especially after her surprise win at the Golden Globes. She gave that rousing speech, and the industry woke right up. I knew in that moment that she would win, regardless of whether or not people actually watched her film. The same happened with Julianne Moore a few seasons back. Voters checked her name because it was finally her turn. The Wife will be long forgotten, but Punch and Judy will get her Academy Award.

I wish the awards were decided on merit, subjective as that may be. I sometimes wonder if the voters actuallly watch all five performances or already have their minds made up. That said, I hope Glenn Close wins. I think that would only leave Laura Linney on my "overdue" list.

I think it's a shame that everybody it's kind of saying that Close will win solely because she is overdue to win, not for the fact that she actually did a wonderful job in the film. Sure it it is overdue but I also feel like she earned it with her talent as well.

^ Sure, she absolutely deserves it on merit...but (I think) that's just incidental. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

I think Glenn Close must’ve boiled somebody’s bunny. I personally have seen The Wife (Thanks, Delta Studio!) l, but haven’t seen ASIB. Maybe once it is available on one of my flights.

Then again I’ve only seen Black Panther of the movies nominated for the big prize. I travel a lot so I rely on Delta to help me stay caught up on my movies. When I’m home I don’t usually feel like sitting in a movie theater although I did seek out movies last Oscar season. I do enjoy movies more in a theater. Last year they added all the movies nominated for best picture to Delta Studio. Hoping they’ll do the same this year although there’s a couple I’ll likely skip. I see they’ve already added Bohemian Rhapsody.

Oh, and I’m rooting for Close on Oscar night.
