Dear Evan Hansen movie?

I’d assume not until a few more years, but I kind of hope they’d work on a next to normal adaptation first.

I'd believe Gettin' the Band Back Together would win a Tony before I'd believe the Dear Evan Hansen novel will do anything other than appeal to the fandom.

I think the movie would get awful reviews. This wouldn't make a great movie since it works a lot better in the small Music Box Theatre. Horrible idea. And the novel is basically fanfare, as others have stated. What's up with shows geared towards teens leaning fanfare one way or another? Between Be More Chill and Dear Evan Hansen novel, this is not a good thing. What's next? A Heathers fan powered tour?

You say a Heathers fan powered tour like its ridiculous but nowadays... very possible honestly.

Fanfare?  I don't think that word means what you think it means.

How could introducing young people to live theater (through, really, any means possible) not be a good thing?  Anyone who's been to a theater in middle America in recent years has probably had the thought, "Damn, who the heck is going to be in the audience for these shows in 20 years?"  I'm 43, and I'm always one of the youngest.  Between the cost and the multitude of other entertainment options, I feel we need to get young people exposed to the magic of theater early.  Hamilton and Wicked and DEH have brought (anecdotally) fantastic developments in this area, but if we need some YA novels come to life, so be it.

Fanfare? I don't think that word means what you think it means."

They catered to the fanbase for the BMC revival, and now they're doing it for the novel. I have nothing against LGBT characters but when they change whole traits about characters because the fans think the character should be something, it turns into a fanfare. Examples to me are some of the ship feeding things added to Be More Chill (Some of which got changed) and now the Dear Evan Hansen novel in theory adding bisexual Connor (or Evan)

Dear Evan Hansen is an original piece of work. If the novel makes Connor bisexual, that's not changing whole traits about his character. We know little to nothing about the real Connor Murphy from the musical. If the novel wants to expand on his character and actually give him a voice of his own (which he absolutely does not have in the musical), that's not changing anything about him. That's just expanding his character. I think you mean pandering more than fanfare, but I don't really think that's really the case here. You can't change something when there was nothing there to begin with.

In addition to what herewegoabc said (which I completely agree with), what is wrong with pandering to the fanbase? If you care about consuming the material and the eventual quality, which by your argument is getting diluted by making a person of unspecified sexuality explicitly bisexual, is not good - then complain. But don't we wish that Scott Rudins of the world would pander to the base and keep the current Dolly! running? Don't we want Shuffle Along to come back? Don't we want an actual gay lead character in the Marvel and DC universes? When these things happen, are they pandering or are they meeting the demand? 

Also agree with an above poster that if this is what it takes to get young people interested in live theater and reading, this is all good. Let's not keeping dissing young people. That's what was done to us when we liked Harry Potter (the people above my generation still call it bs and while I have my criticism, that book singularly got me invested in reading), or Wicked (again, introduced me to live theater like nothing before it did).

I think the novels and the expansion and the “fanfare” is just so awesome. Not about any of the actual material itself, but just because of all the incredible new opportunities the 21st century has opened for musical theatre. It’s sort of a lose lose for some people. I mean, just read William Goldman’s book The Season about the 1967-1968 shows that opened on Broadway. The theatre was a mess and the quality was just as piss poor as many shows today, if not worse. The entire industry wondered how they could attract a younger base to keep the theatre alive. And we did it. We are living in such a healthy, prosperous time for an industry so many people, for some inexplicable reason, think is on its way out. The opposite couldn’t be more true, and in large part, we have young fans to thank. When all the rest of us are gone, the insatiable hunger these fans have will persist, and their tastes will grow and expand. It’s really exciting. A total non sequitur, haha, but it’s just so very inspiring to me.

The definition of fanfare:

1: a short and lively sounding of trumpets

2: a showy outward display

 

Perhaps a better term is "fan service."

 

Anyways, re: this movie, I can't help but feel that there are so many stage musicals better suited for a film adaptation.

Folks, relax. This is just a stupid announcement.

CHICAGO was first mentioned to be filmed in 1978 (by Bob Fosse). Wasn’t made until 2002.

DREAMGIRLS was mentioned to be filmed around 1986. Wasn’t made until 2006.

EVITA was mentioned to be filmed around 1980. Wasn’t made until 1996.

List is endless.

Stephen Chbosky, the director, also wrote the screenplay for the lackluster 2005 film of RENT (though that film's shortcomings had more to do with Chirs Columbus's direction).

Please don't screw this up, Marc Platt and co.

They'd better not wait like the Rent and Hair movies did (a decade or so); the culture had moved on and -- actual qualities as movies aside -- they already seemed a bit dated.

Both of the films Stephen Chbosky directed ("Wonder" and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower") notably deal with troubled kids in school, and I happened to enjoy both of them quite a bit. He's also a writer and has had experience working with playwrights transitioning to film (Jack Thorne co-wrote "Wonder" with him) so here's hoping Levenson is in good hands.

Though, saying all this, I'm sure this won't happen for a while. But if they really want Ben Platt to star in it, his days of looking like a convincing high school senior would be numbered. Given the producing team behind it, I'm betting this is happening sooner rather than later.

I never thought I’d say this, as It once was my favorite genre of film, but they need to stop making movie musicals PERIOD. Nobody knows how to properly film them anymore. Even the “good” ones are full of massive flaws and terrible camera work. I guess it’s hreat that people are being exposed to musicals this way, but the Magic has been lost.

Assuming that this is happening with Ben Platt (Variety says he's in early negotiations...with his dad), they can't wait too long or he'll age out of it. By then, Ben Platt will have more traction too: the Ryan Murphy/Netflix musical series, plus two movies - Love and Oatmeal (a tearjerker?) and Run This Town (a thriller co-starring Damian Lewis).

I think the story will lend itself well to the screen. Whether it will be a commercial flick or an awards contender (or both) is another story.
