What are some of your favorite lesser-known movie musicals from the MGM golden age? I’ve been watching a lot of the old MGM musicals in an attempt to ease my anxiety and escape the dumpster fire the US has become. I have a large collection of the Warner Archive stuff, but always looking for something I might have missed. Of the less popular titles I’m a big fan of Two Tickets to Broadway, Skirts Ahoy!, and Small Town Girl. Any other films you all would recommend would be much appreciated.

Also, does anyone know of a movie lovers site with a message board with lots of old movie musical lovers in it?

Dating back to my boyhood in the 1950's, I have been the ultimate Jeanette MacDonald fan.  I don't know that 1948's "Three Daring Daughters" qualifies as "lesser known," but it remains a personal favorite.  Here she sings with Jane Powell.  Very sweet, I think.

I don't think it's really "lesser known", so much as forgotten or faded from the spotlight, but my favorite would be Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg). "Watch What Happens" and "I Will Wait for You" were big hits in many elevators throughout the later 60s and early 70s... wink

This movie was my introduction to the music of Michel LeGrand. To this day, my favorite movie theme is his theme from Summer of '42

Not MGM golden age, but I love 8 Women (though it's a jukebox musical).

I don't know how obscure it is- it's definitely not first rank- and I know the dvd release was limited- but I love The Boyfriend.  The production numbers are great fun.  Twiggy, Tommy Tune and the whole cast give great performances.

I like "A Date With Judy", "Good News" and "The Glass Slipper". A later MGM musical film that I also love is the musical adaptation of "Goodbye Mr. Chips" starring Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark.
