Has anyone on here seen this show? If you have, I would be very interested to know what you think. My husband and I are thinking of going and can't decide if the $55 ticket price is worth it or if we should go try to rush another Broadway show. I have read a few reviews but honestly didn't want to look too deep into it because if I do end up going I want it to be a surprise! I was just curious to get some opinions on here rather than random stuff I've seen on Facebook.

I saw it last night.  I thought it was dreadfully boring.  It was 4 magic tricks surrounded by a bunch of long boring, meaningless stories over the course of 90 minutes, which was advertised as 70 minutes.  Also, I am a smaller than average guy and I've never been so uncomfortable in a theatre.

I completely disagree with the other guy. I saw it twice. I'd suggest it to anyone and everyone. It was interesting, raw, real, and of course - magical. I cried both times I went. Just go see it! It's worth it!

Did anyone here go last night to this off-bway show's final performance? I saw the show a few times and I agree with tsondie21 that it was very different from any of the other nyc shows out there and it certainly was more of a show about identity and perception than magic. Each time I went I certainly got emotional and those 70 mins flew by quickly!

From reading this interview from Deadline over a week ago, it looks like yesterday was definitely the last show ever.

There's a video of their opening night on Youtube but I hope they'll have one for closing night as well!

What happened to the "journal" after the last performance?

I went to the final show and it was amazing. It was basically celebrities and friends, and people who had gone to the show a bunch. I talked with 5 different people who had the book at some point (I am also in that group). The show wasn't too different than another, except he got choked up at a few points and rushed his lines a bit. It was really endearing and emotional I think for everyone. He also made a few jokes about how everyone there had seen the show, or knew what was coming, and that was pretty fun.

It wasn't clear what is happening with the book going forward other than that he has it now. He did not select a person to leave. At the end pretty much everyone stood up which made things take a while but was good overall. Everyone was pretty into it and wanted the night to continue.

People hung out for a while at the bar and talked about the show and their experiences. The person who I talked to who had seen in the most was 10 times. I got to meet Frank Oz which blew my mind. A guy made a lego version of the stage and gave it to Derek which was pretty cool. I've seen pics now of an afterparty and I saw Derek and Frank getting whisked away to it but that's all I know about it.

It was overall a lovely time.

Special Guests I saw: Tim Gunn, Lawrence O'Donnell, Wyatt Cenac, Neil Patrick Harris, Derek's Moms, Derek's wife, Frank Oz, Jason Sudeikis

Just an FYI the film version of the off-broadway production of IN & OF ITSELF is now available online stream through DOCNYC film festival:

https://www.docnyc.net/film/in-of-itself/

It was supposed to premiere at SXSW earlier in the year but that got canceled. Ticket costs $12 to watch the stream for 48 hours and I thought it translated very well to film! If you have Roku or AppleTV you can watch the stream on your TV!

I just watched it on Hulu, having never heard of it before and knowing nothing going in.

I am at a loss for words. To call this a play, a solo performance, or a magic show would be to do it a disservice. This is nothing less than a spiritual experience caught on camera, as a man wrestles with the nature of truth and lie, perception and reality, identity and sense of self. What's so beautiful is he's not there just to convince the audience of his art. He's there to convince himself.

I've never missed the theatre more than I do right now.

I agree with your assessment Alex, just a stunning performance all around.

We watched it on Hulu tonight and it was the closest experience I've had since quarantine that approximates the post-theater glow that lingers after seeing a great live performance.  Had I seen it at the theater, I probably would have thought there was no way it would work filmed. I would have been wrong.

Watched this last night and loved it!  What a fun, intimate experience.  I can only imagine seeing it live.

Does anyone happen to know how they pull off the letters?

I do happen to know a bit about the letters. I had some family attend the show after I did, and my mom was contacted by the show to see if she could have someone close to her husband (who was attending the show with her) write him a letter to be read on stage. She gave them his son's info and I believe they contacted him and told him what letter to write and where to send it.  I have NO idea how they then had that person randomly choose their own letter from the pile Derek handed them, still some trickery I can't even understand.  But I do know they contact a person attending the show with them to have them find someone to write the letter.

Can I add how much I love that my email alerts got me back on a thread I created in 2017? Just to add here: I went to the show, became obsessed with it, got my family to go to it and was so impressed by the Hulu version. Told everyone I know it was a must watch.

I too saw this on HULU the other night and was floored...emotional and fun and yes very intimate as well...i would have gone to the show at the GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE before it hit NYC if i had only known what was to happen during the show...and here i thought it was only going to be a magic show when i read about it opening at the Geffen...and was a little surprised that the Geffen would house just a magic show...little did i know then...

karissa3, thank you for the information!

I couldn't think of any way that the letter could have happened without the show contacting someone ahead of time, but it's a lot of work for them.  Depending on how someone buys the ticket, the show would potentially know who bought the ticket and how to get in touch with them.  Do you know how your mom bought the ticket?  Also, did your mom's husband's letter get used?  I imagine they would have to have a backup in case someone doesn't show up.

In terms of the letter picking, I wonder if they xerox the letter and every envelope has the same letter in it.
