Directed by Diane Paulus. Book by Diablo Cody.  Orchestrations by Tom Kitt.

Who knows if this will be any good, but my teenage self is freaking out!

I don't go to jukebox musicals. I will make an exception for this show!

YES!

I hope it goes down the RENT / DEV / Hedwig route and asks performers who aren't traditionally attracted or stick thin.

I'm also not a huge fan of jukebox musicals, but this announcement has me quite excited. I love this album and think it will lend itself well to a theatrical adaptation. Looks like I'll be visiting Boston next spring!

Interesting that they are doing Bedlam's Sense and Sensibility. I saw it back when they were doing it in rep with The Seagull, and I really enjoyed it, and it seems to have had success Off-Broadway in the past couple of years. Do you think they could be pruning it for a Broadway transfer, like Great Comet? I wouldn't think it would be a good candidate for a commercial run, but nowadays you never know which made-for-off-broadway shows will get produced on Broadway.

I've finally found my circle of hell: an Alanis Morissette musical with a book by Diablo Cody. This sounds like the worst thing ever created by mankind.

Same! It was the first album I bought with my own money.

It's also being directed by Diane Paulus, and we all know what her track record is like on new musicals.

Do we? I've seen 3 original musicals that she directed (Finding Neverland, Waitress, and Invisible Thread), and I thought her direction on all 3 was pretty solid. They all may have had flaws in the material, but that's hardly her fault. It's true her work on revivals has been more worthy of note, but I don't think her name is necessarily a red flag for an original musical.

This had great potential! Hoping ART doesn't mess this up. Yet it seemed like AMERICAN IDIOT had great potential, but ended up as one big headache.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I don't think that was at the ART.....wasn't that Berkeley Rep?

I'm so glad this is moving forward.  I was very excited when the original concept was first announced, and thought her music, especially from Jagged Little Pill, lent itself well to a theatrical presentation.  It will be interesting to see how they weave the songs into the storyline, but I can see some great potential moments - especially since there is a lot of variety in the album - from driving, angry anthems (You Oughta Know) to unabashed love songs (Head Over Feet) to message-y introspection (You Learn, Ironic).  There are also songs from other albums (Thank U, So Pure, Hands Clean) that would fit in well as the lyrics tell a personal story.

But you don't know the story. It could very well be centered around an early 20s something character, as Alanis was 20 when the album was released. There's a lot that theatre magic can do, but it can't pass Orfeh off as an early 20s year old anymore.

I don't care for her direction. I think Waitress is such a great show despite her over directing the show. Everyone that comes out of ART just looks "cheap" to me. Besides Comet, but that wasn't really a true ART production. But I'll never forget the awfulness of Finding Neverland and how cheap that whole show looked.
