The Dear White People series was just released on Friday- has anyone else caught it yet? I just started a day ago and have nearly finished it. Missed the film, but the series is really excellent. Very smart, and handles a wide-range of topics and viewpoints with grace and humor. The fifth episode, in particular, is breathtaking.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I'm one episode away from finishing and I'm loving it. I didn't like the movie -- in fact, I didn't even watch the whole thing -- but it now feels like a rough draft for the series, allowing them to smooth out the rough edges and get it right. It's very funny but also deeply important. And Lionel is completely adorable. I'm a little bit in love.
He's terrific. And though she doesn't get a focus episode, I love Joelle too.

Just finished watching. It is far superior to the movie. The nice thing is that you need not to have seen it to enjoy the series. The movie was pretty much a lead up to the white face party. I love that the series uses the party as the center of the series and then gives you the back story on the main characters. The only thing that annoyed me a bit was the stereotypical portrayal of the lesbian girl that they asked to attend the town hall and the newspaper editor for the Indepejdent paper. But the series is a bit quirky, which I love, so I overlooked it. My favorite line was "I gave up my hair for you"!
Had to backtrack a bit regarding the secret society. I may just rewatch the season. So much going on and an interesting finale. Kinda should have seen it coming and I was confused until I realized....
I love the incidental music and fell in love with the song at the end of Troy's episode. Downloaded the soundtrack but it wasn't on there. It's "Where Does This Door Go" by Mayer Hawthorne. Just dowloaded Hawthorne's album. Also, I watched trough a slight haze of cold medicine so anoter reason to rewatch!
