I did not care for The Bands Visit.

I do tend to like the non flashy musicals but even for me this was too slow. At least Mean Girls didn’t put me to sleep.

I'm not really into a lot of shows about high schoolers (I don't like Mean Girls either, didn't like the movie or the new production). I can sort of understand why the following for these two showsis so big (especially in the teenagers that follow it, and I think a lot of it is about the subjects they cover over the quality of the show itself.

Anyway, I just don't like either of these shows and I don't think they are as spectacular as their fanbases may suggest. Not my thing.
"

With Heathers, aside from the unnecessary addition of the friend and I think the party, the plot for Heathers is fairly similar to the plot of the movie. And all accounts have said the same for Mean Girls. So I'm not sure that's a show problem. That is, you probably wouldn't like the movies either but for people who do like the movies, the show is giving them what they want. It's not a failure of adaptation in that sense.

I'll give you your favorites as unpopular, but is "Cats/Phantom is bad/ALW's worst" really an unpopular opinion? From what I've seen overall most people on here and in most fan circles despise both. The one I usually see people citing as his best is probably Evita.

Of course, as said previously, I think his best work is Joseph - mostly because it's just pure cheesy/campy fun, which is what I crave (which means I do enjoy Cats, which I think is the actual unpopular opinion nowadays - I don't like Phantom though)
"

Joseph is pretty awful too...

Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita are the only other 2 I can stomach andSunset was ok.
"

Haha, yeah, I figured you would also hate Joseph if you hate Cats! Though again, I feel like hating those works is more popular compared to his more "serious" works.I'm personally not a big fan of Superstar myself. I love Evita though, and find Sunset boring.

My Sondheim opinions I know are DEFINITELY unpopular - I hate Sunday in the Park with George, Merrily We Roll Along, and Passion and dislike Company other than one or two songs. My favorite work that he did both music and lyricsfor is Assassins. (I do love A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, and Forum as well. I'm neutral on Follies.

How wonderful the the theater world is that allows such wildly different opinions while still having enough shows that we actually like to sustain us as such varied audiences!
"

I don't like Sondheim at all, mind I have only seen the films of Sweeney and Into the Woods so probably not the best way to judge him.

I think Dear Evan Hansen is a travesty.

It gives off the message that self worth lies in affirmation from others and that being a con is ok, as long as you play the victim role.

The world is bad, Evan is a self-righteous victim. It's the world upside down. The world is a victim of Evan Hansen. Both story wise and in real life.

Bring It On needs more respect. It’s cheesy and campy, but it’s a good show IMO.

i also hate the sound of Kristen Chenoweth’s voice.

I don't care for the once on this island revival. The production is creative and nice and I was into it for like the first 10-20 minutes. But once I realized what the story was gonna be I started to hate it and that ending is horrible.

Not sure why this thread was bumped but I'll take advantage of it.

Idina Menzel was not the best Elphaba by any means. In my rankings, she's somewhere around 15-20 with a BIG bonus for originating the role.

I think most of us will agree with you about the story itself.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Curtis Holbrook is a way better Spongebob than Ethan Slater. Also, besides from Best Direction, Bands Visit deserved every Tony Award they won. (I wish Michael Arden won for his direction of OOTI)

Caroline, or Change, Fun Home, and The Band's Visit are the best musicals of this century so far.

I strongly dislike Daphne Rubin-Vega's voice and I find that she ruins soundtracks.

Stephanie Torns was my favorite Jenna I've seen out of her, Sara, Betsy and Jessie

Nick Jonas' performance as Marius in the Les Mis 25th anniversary concert is not nearly as cringeworthy as Ramin Karimloo's performance as Enjolras in the same concert.

Its so funny that you say this. Last night, I was youtubing different renditions of "Out Tonight" one after the other. The comments said things like "she's the best Mimi because she invented the role" but I found her voice to sound like she was just talking in pitch(if that makes any sense) Kind of like how Rihanna does on her songs.

I think the best portrayal of Mimi was Tamyra Gray, by far. Followed by Rene.

I hated Dear Evan Hansen. He's a criminal playing the victim.  A common theme these days...

And while I appreciate Hamilton, I find it over staged and pretentious.  I get the casting thing, I really do. But it isn't really that revolutionary for any other reason.  That said, I'm looking forward to seeing it again. Now that i know what I'm dealing with maybe I can just enjoy it on its own merits.

Didn’t like Dear Evan Hansen.

Betsy Wolfe is extremely basic.

Chekhov doesn't do a damn thing for me.

If I Forget deserved the Pulitzer over Cost of Living

Be More Chill is a legitimately great musical, even if the fan base is one of the most toxic I've ever seen for a stage show.

American Son is an excellent and important play, and the reason reactions are so meh (here on the boards and by the actual critics) is because they are mostly written by white people, for whom the subject matter just isn't as resonant.

Bernadette Peters' voice is like a hamster screaming as it claws a chalkboard to my ears. She was terrible as Dolly, Desiree, Rose, and Sally.

Audrey Hepburn's Eliza was better than Julie Andrews'.

Spongebob was a mediocre show elevated by a stellar cast, and they didn't deserve the Set Design Tony.

The order for who deserved the Tony in 2015 should have gone: Chita, then Beth, then Kelli, then Kristin, then Leanne. The 2016 Tony should have been Carmen, then Cynthia, then Jessie, then Laura, and Pippa Soo shouldn't have even been nominate.

also idk if this is unpopular but the fact Mean Girls won't let their understudies say when they're going on when none of their leads are big enough to be drawing crowds is ridiculous.

I’m black and I thought the play was meh. While the subject matter is intresting, the play never reaches its full potential. and for speaking about the people commenting being white (on the boards) thats a pretty big assumption.

Evan Hansen is a horrible person unworthy of pity and makes the entire musical feel icky.

Sweet Charity is the biggest disparity between an amazing score and train-wreck of a book.

Albee plays are over-rated.

I frequently listen to the Movie soundtrack of Rent purely because I like Rosario Dawson's voice exponentially more than Daphne Rubin-Vega's.

Harry Potter is the same way, their understudies can't say when they're going on either. I see both sides, I get why they can't say, but I wish they could say since some frequent goers to the show would love to see a different character perspective.

I think If/Then is underrated, but then it's not like I revisit the score or anything. I related to the material at the time.
