Agree 100%. I thought it was thrilling live and saw it three times, but the recording feels flat. Perhaps the staging (which I generally found superior to the Broadway revival) and the revolve brought things to life.

It will be interesting to see what happens on stage in a few weeks when the show reopens with some cast changes. I am seeing it twice during previews.

Joanna Riding will be sublime no doubt I hope I can get to see her.

I saw the broadcast and quite liked the staging and design. The book scenes were great and it was really nice to hear some of that deleted dialogue. The singing was far from perfect, but I liked it. I wish this production would come over here with an American cast. I'd love to see it.

The recording is nice. It's not the most beautifully sung recording at all though, but it's a nice recording. Not horrible at all. The 2011 recording might be my favorite recording of the score. Although, while I enjoy some dialogue on a cast album, I really don't need the entire book on the album.

The one unqualified success of the recording is "One More Kiss".

I would consider seeing it again - I thought many of the acting choices were good..but musically, meh.

London follies: Shall I tell you why I really invited you here? When we met again, and made love. I thought maybe here it is at last. A chance to find a coherent existence of so many years of bad productions. The original London production, Roundabout etc. Of course theres Bernadette, but I thought perhaps, just perhaps, you might be in need of rescue too.

qolbinau: for renewing my national theatre subscription?

London follies: it was only a thought.

qolbinau: when my eyes are open and I look at you, i see a musical that I have loved for a long time that, entranced me. All over again when I came to London it gives me such genuine pleasure that in-spite of the past I came here..twice..for the sheer delight of being with you again. The musical who could rescue me of course.

But when my eyes are not open, which is most of the time. All I see is a girl in a pink dress (formerly red dress). Walking out of that Marquis stage in her slow, staggered entrance. Getting through 2.5 hours with her lyrical, if a little scratchy and hoarse at times, singing voice. Pretending to be 20 years younger than she is.

London Follies: isnt it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground and making money - you in mid-air

qolbinau- Bu-

London Follies: no, dont look at me. Please, not just yet. Whyyy am I here this is crazzzzzyyyyyyy..........immm soooo gladdd I cameee.

qolbinau: Im sorry, I never should have come.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I’m glad I have this latest recording, but it will never replace the 2011 version or Bruce Kimmel’s remastering of the Original Broadway Cast Recording.

I've actually never been a big Follies fan, but I do like a lot of the more famous numbers. Nothing will ever top Marin Mazzie's Losing My Mind, God rest her.

What do we think of Tracie Bennett's I'm Still Here? I was a little perplexed by the hysterical movement of her performance at the Oliviers, but it's easier to appreciate it on the recording. Those vowels, though. PLOSH velvet sometimes...

I find Page's rendition more enjoyable and more powerful than Bennett's.

Also, I know i've been tough on Imelda's vocals, but I will say she actually does sing "In Buddy's Eyes" in the original key, and her rendition is growing on me a BIT. With that being said, "Too Many Mornings" is still a disaster.

I thought the production itself was incredibly good, with very strong direction and performances. It just doesnt transfer over to the recording, where it unfortunately falls flat.

Some of the differences are interesting. In Loveland, the dialogue Roscoe says is something completely different to what was said in the last Broadway revival recording. Was that in the original script?

In 1971, the character of Roscoe never appeared in Loveland.  The costume parade was accompanied by the male cavaliers (over-dubbed, like the rest of the song, on tape).  The current lyrics are an expansion of the original London production, more cynical than the original lyrics and not as good.  In my opinion, Roscoe's appearance in the Loveland sequence is a big mistake.

I thought as much. The lyrics are so tonally at odds with the idealism of Loveland, and Roscoe has no real purpose of being there. The whole Loveland sequence in this production was a bit strange (entertaining and effective, but odd)
