Closer to the stage is better for this one. I'd go for anywhere in the orchestra over the rear mezz.
"

Good to know - thanks!

Angels in America is the only obvious choice. Now now, I can hear the complaints now: "But Oak, it's not even a musical!" "But Oak, you literally haven't seen any of these because you haven't even been to New York this season!"

None of that matters, and the reason for this is three words: Na. Than. Lane. Anything that he is in automatically counts as a Musical because the sweet, aspartimisal tones coming from his vocal chords can't be called anything but song. And secondly, anything he's in is automatically the best of the season because it's closer to Broadway's True Purpose than anything else that season. End of Discussion.

I found it really enjoyable. I'm not sure why it gets the amount of hate it's been getting -it's a fun show! Yes, some of the lyrics are... questionably lazy... but overall I thought it was a very entertaining night of theater. I was smiling the whole time. If someone's coming to NYC and can only see one show, I'm not sure it's the ONE I'd recommend, but it's certainly worth seeing if you live here or have vacation options!

- Kinky Boots
- Dear Evan Hansen
- Hamilton
- Waitress
- Lobby Hero
- Wicked
- Rent
- Newsies

I agree with Judy. I wouldn't say it's the best show of the season, but to me, it was enjoyable in its own way.

Just for information, I haven't seen the movie. I have seen most of the shows your niece liked, except for Lobby Hero and Newsies, and liked them all.

Probably goes without saying, but a 20-year-old niece is the absolute perfect audience for Mean Girls. I'm sure she'll love it!

FWIW, I (late-30s, female) was sitting between two senior couples, and I could tell that they absolutely were not getting any of the social media jokes or current pop culture references... and definitely none of the movie references. The audience roared at the Danny DeVito line and I heard one of them audibly ask her husband what was so funny. They looked bewildered.

That's not to say that people of all ages can't enjoy this, or that younger people who do get the jokes aren't allowed to dislike the show... but I think that might be a pretty big factor in how much people enjoy the show. I'd imagine I'd feel similarly bewildered if I was watching a show with a bunch of had-to-be-there jokes about the 1950s.

Someone in a Tree2 said: "ONCE ON THIS ISLAND by a wide mile, electric and heartstoppingly moving.

MY FAIR LADY is first runner-up, a cooler show delivered with panache and skill if not swooning emotion.

And then, I'm sorry to say, THE BAND'S VISIT takes a distant third place. The music could be lovely, but the show simply traveled too small a journey for me. An admirable Act I waiting for its Act II.
"

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, undoubtedly. THE BAND'S VISIT just did not do it for me and I do not understand the hype (mind you, I am not a HUGE theater critic but can't get behind this one). Spend the money on ONCE ON THIS ISLAND. You will not regret it.

Maybe if Band's Visit had been set in a small American town 'certain' people may have enjoyed it more?

I have to agree that Bands Visit was one of the most boring musicals that I have ever seen. I sat there for 2 hours and not a single thing happened. Everyone keeps saying how it shows the beauty of human connection, but I didn't even see any human emotion. Everything about it was bland and unremarkable.

Spongebob, on the other hand, was definitely my favorite musical.

Favorite Musical this season? It's a tie :

"Girlfriend" at Signature Theatre  in Arlingtom, Va - a gay romance - what's not to like?

"Snow Child" Arena  in DC

Once again, DC surpasses  Broadway - 'Escape to Whatever" and "Summer"? Pure Crap!  "The Band's Visit" was last year for me ... and it is the perfect musical.

Agree with The Band's Visit on Broadway. Sublime.

Desperate Measures flew below my radar. I am seeing it the first week it re-opens at New World Stages. I hear the score has a country sound so I am all in. Can't wait.

Sponge Bob. It had a musical score.

That's important in a musical.

I want to watch this!  But there are still no dates available for late October.  Will the producers extend the run? :)

Definitely The Band’s Visit! The music is absolutely gorgeous. I really hope it wins best orchestrations for the Tonys.
