'Clown Bar' is a dive worth visiting.This pulp fiction novel stained with grease paint is a detective tale set on the mean streets of the clown underworld. Happy (Jonathan Sweatt ) is an ex-clown headliner turned detective. He returns to his old stomping grounds on a vengeance to flush out the clown who killed his brother Timmy (Zach Tarwater) It's comical cotton candy chaos, and Ringling Bros' raunchy.

Imagine if Sydney Pollack and Michal Baryshnikov collaborated on making art on canvas. With every move of the dancers body, a path of colored paint is applied to a canvas. Formations Dance Company brings this concept to life in 'Permanence.' Director Whitney Renfroe is very excited to bring contemporary dance to audiences in an exciting, fresh, and unconventional experience. If you are not connoisseur of dance, this creative performance will change your palate with an artisan flair. 

'Anthem for the Middle Aged Band' is a film that shows how a band is a family. Like any tight relationship that is worth a damn, breaking up was not easy. Time had to work its course to lead them to a collective resolve, and eventually to spark fire in constructive creativity.

The Birmingham Black Repertory Theatre Company steps to the plate with fierceness and momentum in its inaugural performance of the Tony award winning musical  a?oeChoir Boy.a?? This coming of age musical delivers a layered structure backed up with dynamic acting, and vocals from a cast of young men of color. The subjects of class, race and sexuality are exposed with extremely emotional results.

'Smoke on the Mountain' is a entertaining and uplifting show about a 1938 traveling family roadshow bringing gospel music, bluegrass and more. South City Theatre brings this touring performance from church to church for just a few weeks. Even if you are not a religious person, you will find this show to be fun and delightful in character work and music.

Carlton Bell II is a young Birminghamian with an artistic theatrical vision. Bell is an artist who wears many hats; actor, filmmaker, director, producer, and now head of the Birmingham Black Repertory Theatre Company. Next week they will have their inaugural performance of the Tony Award winning musical 'Choir Boy.'

The struggle breaks opens layers of pain to expose raw, heavy and hard to face truths. Director Rhonda Erbrick success as a director is clear by the gasps and teary-eyed moments from the audience.

John Storie is musician / showman with a true comical wit, and abundant skills on the guitar. His new album'Ponderosa' is a folksy throwback to his early days, and some swinging straight ahead jazz. He recorded the album so it would hold different guitar sounds, texture and vocals. He is a longtime showman with much to sing about.

'Songs for a New World' at Birmingham Festival Theatre is a very intimate performance with powerful vocals and surprises. The take away is to embrace the power of unity, hope and resilience. We all have struggles that seem to be too much to bear. This wonderful show shares the truth that you are not alone, and you are stronger than you think.

'Songs for a New World' is not a typical (Beginning -middle and end) linear musical. It is a collection of powerful songs that examines life, love and the choices that we make.I was able to speak with some the cast to get their creative insight into giving life to this popular musical.

Theatre Tuscaloosa's production of 'Grease' is definitely automatic, systematic and hydromatic. Watching talented young actors breathe life into this classic musical is well worth the trip. 'Grease' is definitely still the word.

This is a production with much attention to detail and talent. 'Matilda' is delightfully joyful, and unpleasant at the same time. The sweet with the sour is a delicate combination to make in any dish or story. Red Mountain Theatre Company delivers this delightfully structured tale about a brilliant five-year-old girl gifted with a little extra than the ordinary.

Professor Henry Higgins (Kyle Holman) rises to the challenge to turn lowly Eliza Doolittle (Kristen Sharp) into a proper English lady. Red Mountain Theatre Company is offering an exciting and colorful production of the classic 'My Fair Lady' that truly makes you want to dance all night.

Reaching for the American dream while adjusting to living under prejudice is exposed by Alfred Uhry's 'The Last Night of Ballyhoo' at South City Theatre. This Tony award winning play is a touching, relatable, and revealing look at the cost of acceptance. The story peels back the layers to expose the complicated dynamics of a Jewish American family living in Atlanta in the 1930's.

With Pride Week approaching, Birmingham Festival Theatre is on time with offering an emotional and striking production of Robert Anderson's 1953 drama 'Tea and Sympathy.' Set at an all boys' school in the early 1950's, the show tackles the fear, insecurity and the eventual anger that people under persecution face. The teenage boys attending the school are written with an amped jocular rambunctiousness. The carnal behavior lurking behind the boy's clean crisp khaki's and sweater vests is a starter kit for toxic masculinity.

Jeff Goldblum and The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra delivered fresh arrangements of jazz standards and some cool improvisational jams. Goldblum effortlessly flowed with gleeful engagement with the hyped Birmingham audience. He gave personal stories, entertaining vamping, trivia games, answering questions from the audience, and a wonderful run of Alabama themed questions on everything from BBQ, college football and half moon cookies.

Alice (Emma Brooke Levering) is a young girl who after spying a curious white rabbit in a vest and coat run into hole. Follows it down and is whisked into a seemingly never-ending adventure. The all female cast provides a wonderful "Girl Power" dynamic in the show by the Birmingham Children's Theatre.

Jeff Goldblum is behind the piano at the helm of the jazz ensemble, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. Providing smooth charm with playful vamp. The 'hep-cat' works the crowd with Q and A, playing trivia, and laying down classic jazz standards and improv. Sunday June 2nd, Goldblum's The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra will be performing an intimate and energetic jazz performance at the 2019 Viva Health Starlight Gala for the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.
