THE MERCHANT OF VENICE Comes To Volkstheater Next Month William Shakespeare's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is coming to the Volkstheater, running from September 8 to September 28.

The story follows Shylock, the Jew of Venice, who grants loans to all who need it. In Venice, one gets rich through gambling or loses everything in roulette. Only Shylock is reputable, an old-school banker, who borrows money and takes interest.

A new merchant, Antonio, wants to marry the object of conjugal desire: the billionaire's daughter Portia. But to pursue a Rich Woman, you must be rich yourself - or at least pretend. Antonio goes to Shylock and demands credit. A contract is drawn up: in the event that Antonio can not repay the money by the agreed time, Shylock may cut one pound of meat from his body. What follows is a game of chance. Who wins, who loses?

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is Shakespeare's darkest comedy. Anna Badora, who opens her fourth season as a director, stages her as a game with high stakes: money, love, revenge, law - and the naked life.
