Segerstrom Center For The Arts Announces 2018 – 2019 Music Series

Segerstrom Center for the Arts has announced its annual Jazz, Cabaret and Chamber Music series for the 2018-2019 Season. It's another musically absorbing year of great and most gifted artists whose works and performances will canvas a vast range of styles and traditions.

2018-2019 Jazz Series
Jazz has been part of the Center's repertoire for more than 30 years, and has helped to establish Orange County's thriving music scene. NEA Jazz Masters Ahmad Jamal, Branford Marsalis and Kenny Barron bring power to the Center's 2018-2019 Jazz Series line-up. Making their Center debuts are the astonishing young Azerbaijani pianist Shahin Novrasil performing with Jamal, and the Yoko Mabuchi Trio with Marsalis. Vocalist Catherine Russell makes her Center debut and Kurt Elling entertains with a special holiday set.

2018-2019 Cabaret Series
In the Cabaret Series, the Center welcomes Rita Wilson, Rob Istad and Aaron Lazar with their special programs. Rita Wilson will perform and her friends - Billy Steinberg ("True Colors," "So Emotional," "Like a Virgin"), Lindy Robbins (multi-platinum "Skyscraper," "Want to Want Me," "Dangerous") and musician-composer-arranger-songwriter-record producer Darrell Brown (co-writer with LeAnn Rimes, Keith Urban, Bon Jovi and others) - will sing some of their greatest hit tunes. Pacific Chorale Artistic Director Rob Istad is creating a tribute to music from Broadway and motion pictures performed by an ensemble of Pacific Chorale singers. Broadway veteran Aaron Lazar will share stories about his Broadway, film and television career and will perform a full evening of classic showtunes. Tony Award®- winner Bernadette Peters returns to the Center in her one-night-only evening filled with memorable songs by Stephen Sondheim and others, and her captivating personality. Also in the Cabaret Series is the Grammy Award-winning vocalist Steve Tyrell, returning to the Center singing treasured tunes from the Great American Songbook.

2018-2019 Chamber Music Series
The Center's Chamber Music Series explores the ever-evolving world of "classical" music. The Emerson String Quartet brings a major multi-media music event with the West Coast premiere of theatre piece, Shostakovich and the Black Monk: A Russian Fantasy. Several of the series favorites are returning with all new repertories: Escher String Quartet, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Takács Quartet and the Fauré Quartett with Luis Primera. Gifted Venezuelan double bassist Primera has toured with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and Gustavo Dudamel to the United States, South America, Middle East, and Europe. Composer, musicologist and author Dr. Byron Adams will provide fascinating and informative talks prior to each performance starting at 7:15 p.m.

2018-2019 Music Series Bonus Options
The 2018-2019 Music Series also includes two bonus options: concerts by Broadway's Tony Awardwinning Lea Salonga and the Grammy Award-winning Third Coast Percussion makings its Center debut. A Tony Award® winner for her performance as Kim in Miss Saigon, Salonga enthralls audiences around the world with her powerful, crystal-clear soprano and the emotional depth she brings to her singing and storytelling. Expect a dazzling performance packed with songs from her many Broadway credits. Third Coast Percussion is the first percussion ensemble to win a Grammy Award in a chamber music category. Their program will include a new work by Philip Glass, co-commissioned by Center Chamber Music patrons Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting specifically for the ensemble.
