Miami City Ballet Announces 2018/19 Season

Miami City Ballet is proud to announce its 33rd season, showcasing the company's world-class artistry and rising prestige described by The New York Times as "an exceptional troupe, by Balanchine standards, anywhere in the world." Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez has curated a new season that includes the company premiere of Brahms/Handel, a unique choreographic collaboration between Twyla Tharp and Jerome Robbins; Paul Taylor's audience favorite Company B, set to the 1940s sounds of The Andrews Sisters; Jerome Robbins masterwork Dances at a Gathering; Justin Peck's Heatscape, inspired by the vibrant streets of Miami's Wynwood Arts District; and the highly anticipated return of George Balanchine's full-length A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Lopez says, "Our 2018/19 season features an outstanding lineup - from beloved classics to ingenious, contemporary works -- highlighting the rich variety of styles for which our dancers are renowned."
Program One launches the 2018/19 season in the fall, featuring two George Balanchine masterpieces and a true audience favorite by Paul Taylor. First up is Concerto Barocco, a signature Balanchine ballet, set to Bach's glorious Double Violin Concerto in D Minor. Then, back in the rep after nearly ten years, comes that great audience favorite Company B, a Taylor work set to popular 40s hits like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Rum and Coca-Cola" sung by The Andrews Sisters. And finally, Ballet Imperial is a thrilling masterpiece that pays homage to the spirit and grandeur of imperial St. Petersburg. Balanchine described it as a contemporary tribute to Petipa, the father of classical ballet, and to Tchaikovsky - his greatest composer.
Program Two highlights two 20th century masterworks by Jerome Robbins. Dances at a Gathering, featuring ten dancers and live Chopin piano music, has been acclaimed as one of his greatest ballets, a profound yet light-hearted tribute to dancing and to dancers. This is the work that marked Robbins' return to classical dance following his series of Broadway triumphs - West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, et al. And then Brahms/Handel, a unique collaboration between two choreographic geniuses who were also close friends: Robbins and Twyla Tharp. It's a whirl of excitement - clever, dynamic, highest-octane - that The New York Times rightly acclaimed as "unlike anything in the ballet repertory."
The Four Temperaments, which opens Program Three, is a magnificent, groundbreaking work inspired by the medieval belief that human beings are made of four different humors that determine a person's temperament. Balanchine believed in "seeing the music" - and in the extended duet Duo Concertant, one of the sensations of New York City Ballet's legendary 1972 Stravinsky Festival, the on-stage violinist and pianist play an integral role. The romantic and joyous Flower Festival in Genzano Pas de Deux brings us the grace and charm characteristic of the Danish 19th-century master choreographer August Bournonville. And, inspired by Miami's vibrant Wynwood Arts District, Heatscape rounds out the bill. Choreographer Justin Peck and visual artist Shepard Fairey beautifully merge ballet and guerilla street art in this stunning collaboration of movement, music and design, which was created for the company three years ago.
Program Four closes the 2018/19 season with the first return of one of Miami City Ballet's most extraordinary productions, the reimagining of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Balanchine's cherished full-length ballet based on William Shakespeare's timeless tale of love and magic, reality and illusion. The audience is transported to the ocean floor - a perspective that's uniquely Floridian - through the creative collaboration of two internationally acclaimed artists: Michele Oka Doner, with her ravishing costumes and sets, and Academy Award-winner Tarell Alvin McCraney's dramatic direction. With its live Mendelssohn music (including the immortal Wedding March) and its fairytale cast that features 24 children, six vocalists and the breathtaking Miami City Ballet dancers, A Midsummer Night's Dream is a dazzling spectacle for families and audiences of all ages.
The thrilling new production of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker returns to Miami and West Palm Beach, adding a stop at Ft. Lauderdale's Broward Center. The Wall Street Journal called it the "Caribbean-flavored Nutcracker ... a production that adds a new and marvel-filled chapter to the ballet's long and evolving history." The holiday classic features magical sets and costumes by renowned artists Isabel and Ruben Toledo as well as a dazzling winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes, The Sugarplum Fairy and an epic battle between heroic toy soldiers and mischievous mice, set to Tchaikovsky's dreamlike score.

ABOUT MIAMI CITY BALLET:
Miami City Ballet, now in its 33rd season, has been led by Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez since 2012. Lopez was recently named one of "The Most Influential People in Dance Today" by Dance Magazine. MCB was founded in 1985 by Miami philanthropist Toby Lerner Ansin and Founding Artistic Director Edward Villella. The Company has 51 dancers and a repertoire of more than 100 ballets. Miami City Ballet School, the official school of Miami City Ballet, is one of the most respected ballet training academies in America.
