CSUF'S Spring Dance Theatre Opens This Friday

"Spring Dance Theatre" is an adventure in story-telling coordinated by Gladys Kares, running May 3-13, 2018 in the Little Theatre. "Spring Dance Theatre" combines student, faculty and guest artist choreography in a mix of classic, jazz ballet and modern dance.

The evening begins with "Tumultus," a contemporary piece inspired by the mysterious alien life forms that the human race knows nothing about. Choreographed by Emily Ploense and Chandler Davids, the piece is an abstract take on aliens causing an outbreak into human society and the chaos that ensues. Alexander Caballero's piece, "Shrinking World," explores the idea that the world is 'shrinking' due to the ever-increasing connected-ness of the human race. "Like Bread," featuring choreography by Taylor-Anne Murray, is inspired by Murray's own grandparents, and tells a story of love withstanding the test of time. Inspired by the #MeToo movement, Lisa D. Long choreographs a modern piece entitled "For Those Who Cannot Speak," that honors the woman whose elbow was featured on the cover of TIME magazine, and explores the woman's journey from frustration and anger towards support for each other and undeniable, resilient strength.

"The Night," choreographed by Jessica Kondrath is a modern piece choreographed to Pripyat by Hauschka. A'Kaila Willis choreographs "Eden" to music by contemporary composer Arvo Pärt. Joshua D. Estrada-Romero choreographs a modern contemporary piece entitles "Fragmented" that is inspired by the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, signifying that nothing is ever truly broken forever, and to embrace imperfection and flaws. Finally, in his piece entitled "Pas de Huit" or "What a Racquet," Dale A. Merrill explores traditional ballet movement, and blends it together with contemporary dance stylings in a piece inspired by quirky everyday scenarios.

Scenic design is coordinated by Ann Sheffield, lighting design is by Tiffany Williams, costume design is coordinated by Katie Wilson, and sound design is by Danthi Tran.

Spring Dance Theatre plays at 8pm on May 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12 and at 2pm on May 6, 13. General admission tickets are $14 ($12 with advance Titan Discount purchase for students, seniors or with a CSUF ID). All tickets are $14 at the door.
