Review: REGIONAL AWARDS & ARGENTINIAN STAGES in Argentina

At the end of last year, BroadwayWorld.com announced the winners for the 2018 BroadwayWorld Argentina Awards. Regional productions, touring shows, and more were all included in the awards, honoring productions which opened between October 1st, 2017 through September 30th, 2018. In 2018 the BroadwayWorld Regional Awards were bigger and better than ever, including over 100 cities across America, Canada, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia!

Argentinian productions are growing every day, and so many of them deserve to be seen by theatre lovers.

"Sunset Boulevard" was one of them. Presented in 2018 at the Maipo Theatre and with an amazing cast and team, the show was a hit. Mariano Chiesa displayed his talent as he always does, and was named Best Actor in a Professional Musical. Aside from "Sunset Boulevard", he has been a part of many great productions such as, "Los Monstruos", "Casi Normales" and "Avenida Q".

"El violinista en el tejado" opened at the Astral Theatre and brought several well known actors to the stage that filled this story with magic and made it sparkle. Raul Lavié, Julia Calvo, Dan Breitman, Manuela Del Campo and Sami Abadi are only a few of the names that formed this spectacular cast. Florencia Otero, who played Hodel, won the Broadway World award for Best Actress in a Professional Musical. Her name has been all over the theatre scene for years, since she played many leading characters in major argentinian productions, such as "El Violinista en el Tejado", "Quién retiene a quién", "Franciscus", "Tango feroz", "Casi Normales", "Despertar de primavera", "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", and "Rent".

Buenos Aires is a city where culture and art are anywhere and everywhere, and the amount of productions, specially the non-professional, or as argentinians would call them, "off" productions, bring to the table a different level of commitment and give a voice to those who have something they need to say. "Caramelos para el viaje" is a national play by Graciela Sverdlick that was adapted by her niece, Julieta Sverdlick, who also wrote the music for it and won the Best Actress in a Musical (Off production) for her performance in it. She was also a part of "Therapy, here I go" in NYC, a. show that she's about to star in again, back in Buenos Aires. "Caramelos para el viaje", which also won Best Off Musical, told a sweet story about two women who are trapped in who they think they are, and by talking to one another discover things inside themselves they didn't even knew they had.

Don't miss this theatre season in Argentina, where theatre is growing and blooming, and people have so many different voices that need to be heard.
