London Symphony Cellist Thomas Marlin Guests with Bronzewing Quartet

The dynamic ensemble of string musicians who are the core of Bronzewing Quartet: Lester Wong, Violin, Wendy Heiligenberg, Violin and Rita Reichbart, Viola, are joined by international cellist Thomas Marlin, who has recently returned from London, in their next concert at 2.30pm Saturday 15 September at Living Choice, 123 Fisher Street, Fullarton. Thomas is standing in for Bronzewing cellist Joseph Freer, who has recently become a new father.

Thomas' performance portfolio encompasses three continents and includes concerti, recitals, chamber music and orchestral playing. In 2015, he joined the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle as a guest member, and performed Shostakovich's 1st Cello Concerto with the Janus Ensemble (of which he is principle cellist). He has performed in several countries including, Germany and Italy.

Since returning to Adelaide Thomas regularly joins the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as a guest cellist, and has worked substantially with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra

Bronzewing presents a program of works by composers Erwin Schulhoff , Igor Stravinsky, Mendelssohn, and Elena Kats-Chernin, who arranged some of her piano works for the String Quartet. There is also an original transcription of Argentinian Tangos by Pedro Vizzarro Vallejos whom leader of the quartet, Lester Wong, worked with when the composer visited Adelaide recently.

Lester Wong said of the program: "The two Mendelssohns, Op. 80 and 81 are written near the end of the composer's life. Filled with aspirated warmth but sorrow in response to his sister's death, they balance the program out with the remaining shorter Tango pieces."

The remaining Tango will feature original transcription of Argentinian Tango, by Argentina/New York composer and Violist Pedro Vizzaro Vallejos, which Lester explained "are as close as you can get to the original Argentinian Tango orchestral works."

Bronzewing Quartet was formed in 2015 as an initiative to provide regular performing opportunities for a working String Quartet. Since then they have worked on establishing core repertoire including Haydn, Mendelssohn and Mozart, alongside more contemporary arrangements of composers such as Piazzolla.

Bronzewing looks forward to cementing it's reputation as an exciting quartet of emerging artists, taking part in chamber music festivals, recitals, as well as touring regional Australia as part of the RCS Ensemble with Co-Opera - Opera on the Move. The Bronzewing Quartet are a Royal Commonwealth Society ensemble.
